I don't really know much about remote start systems. But the wife has been talking about one. Seems pretty straight forward. They've been around forever now. But I have some of THOSE questions. Like, how the hell does the system know the truck has started? What makes it stop and not just grind the hell out of the starter? Cause somedays it seems to take a little longer to actually turn the engine over. Nothing out of the ordinary, just maybe a few cranks more to get it to fire. Like, it always seems to be easier to fire it up after it's been running a while. Seems like a cold start takes maybe a second more. Just one of those questions I've never really taken the time to find an answer to until now.

found this link: www.diynet.com/diy/ab_parts_accessories/article/0,2021,DIY_13690_2999451,00.html basically a "smart-sense" wire signals the starter unit when the engine has been started so that the cranking mechanism will disengage.. im quoting that off of that site... not from my experience since i havent installed one but will like to do so preferably before it gets unbearably cold...

i install car electronics for an aftermarket shop and it is true the brain signals the starter not to crank. also, a wire thats hooked up to your tach knows how long to crank to turn your engine over. another note, DO NOT BUY A CHEAP UNIT because it will more than likely mess something up. compustar is a little pricey but definately worth the price. just make sure its a well known brand that has a good rep. im also pretty sure your truck has a transponder key and will need a hide away unit that you will lose one of your keys in the dash until starter is removed. a key from mitsu is about 140.00 so if you dont have at least 2 you will need to buy one. hope this helps and if you want to do yourself let me know and i will post the wiring diagram for your year

if u want a remote start why not get a alarm system 4 ur truck that has that feature. Viper is just 1 of the companys that make then and they come with a fob that pages u when the alarm goes off. Clay

Well it seems that the old lady REALLY wants remote start! Lets just cut to the chase. What's the best option for a 2000 MS with factory keyless entry/alarm? All I can find in Colorado Springs is Python. Any good? Need input!!!

ive never heard of python but there are soooooooooooooooo many r/s out there. as long as you are getting a good warranty (at least two years as some have lifetime) and you feel comfortable with your shop, i would get it. another option would be to order a remote start online, and have your shop install it. they may charge you 20$ or so over install price because its not their equipment but at least you get the unit you really want

Cool. I'll do some more research and go from there. I've been out of the mobile electronics scene now for over 14 years. Tryin to catch up over night!

Python is a cheaper version from viper. Viper is sold to select dealers. Python can pretty much be sold to anyone. In colorado springs you can try cartoys. They have some of the best installers in the state. They mainly deal in Alpine and code alarms. I my self have had viper remote start in 3 vehicles over the last 8 years. The best thing to have in colorado. IF you have the security light on the instermant cluster then one of you keys does need to get installed in the vehicle like Fiya said. It tricks the truck and makes it think the key is in the ignition. If you get remote start you can actually have the keyless added without alarm so you only need one remote. But for another $100 to $150 i would have the alarm features added. Your usually looking at a base price of $229 with the transponder bypass pieces and extra install charge. I used to work for Quality Auto Sound and Cartoys. So i have a lot of knowledge with these systems

I have a CoolStart unit on my 2000 Montero Sport Limited with the factory keyless/alarm.
Everything works OK, I lost one key to the process, which is fine... However -
This has only happened a few times, but what happens is that when unlocking the car with the remote starter - the passenger door handle has been opened at some specific time where it triggers the factory alarm (before it is deactivated??). the only way to turn the alarm off at that point is to use the factory FOB.
Anyone have any idea why this has happened?
Also, the security light does not turn on when the car is locked and apparently armed.

I have a similar problem with my alarm. All the doors must unlock at the same time. If someone is holding the passenger door handle up when disarming, the factory alarm will stay armed and will go off when the driver door is opened. The aftermarket alarm needs to be patched into two sets of wires behind the fuse panel. One set is Black w/blue stripe. one wire is controlled by the door lock/unlock switch and the other is controlled by the outside key lock. If the aftermarket alarm is only patched into the switch wire, it will not turn your dome light off when pushing the button to lock. The other set of wires is Black w/red stripe and they control the unlock. I may be backward on the colors for lock and unlock. someone correct me if I am wrong. The point is you need to run a jumper wire which will connect both Black W/blue stripe together to make it work properly and also connect both the black w/red wires together as well. I am still trying to find a good way of just disconnecting the factory alarm without messing with the ETACS module. let me know if this works. www.the12volt.com/installbay/forum_posts.asp?TID=67837&PN=1
