All right!
Lets get a trail run for the SO-CAL Montero club going! dates are for March 16, SAT .8:00 am those who wish to camp the night can. I will need feed back for this.
The RUN.
We will be hitting up the Cleghorn trail 2N47 on the San bernadino mountains. This trail is considered the "dirty little secrets" in the SBM. It is rated easy but if you choose to take the bypasses, the rating shoots up to most difficult. the trail is normally run from west to east, which is what we will be doing.
We will be accessing the Cleghorn trail from the I-15. The exit is 2 miles south of the Cajon junction exit to highway 138. Once you exit from I-15 north you make a right and will hit dirt within 20feet. This is the trail head and where we will be meeting.8:00am
For those of you who have gone to the big bear run for the john bull trail, This is about 2 hours closer. So no excuses please.
The Cleghorn ridge trail has approximately 26 "mini trails" that take you off from the forest road. These "mini-trails" are the result of fuel breaks years ago. Some of these "mini-trails" are deep and rutted with narrow switch backs. Not too many rocks more ruts and off camber stuff so rocker panels are not required. this will certainly test out your driving skills and your rig. Cleghorn will run along the ridge and drop us into silverwood lake.
From Cleghorn trail end we will go onto highway 138 for a few miles north then east on highway 173 until we reach the dam. We won't have to air up as long as we keep it under 30mph. From here we will be challenging 2N17X trail. The 2N17X trail is more challenging from bottom to top. Of course this is the way we will be going. This trail was also once a fuel break for wild land fires. It follows the ridge from the Silverwood Lake Dam to the ridgeline near pilot rock. This trail is rated most difficult.
We will access the 2N17X trail from 2N33 from the dam. Following 2N33 up and over the hill for about a mile to reach 2N17X trunoff. 2N17X is axp 2miles. This trail is steep and the surface is loose in a lot of spots. The main Challenge is considered a "doozy". It splits into 3 routes. the center is the hardest and the others are less. Locker, large tires and high ground clearance are a must for the center route. It is well rutted and has a major pitch at the top. When we reach it, I guess we will have to see how big your cojones are..
The trail turns south as it moves along the ridge and back to 2N33. We will be making a right and go along the ridge cresting the lake back to the dam. From this point it is easy.
Some may wish to check out the camp ground at Silverwood lake or drive home.
This should be a very fun, challenging and scenic day. I hope to hear from and see all of you for this trip.
