hello everyone,
I will try and make this as simple as possible. I have a 2002 Montero Sport limited with the infinity cd player in dash and also the 6 disc changer in dash. I believe it has 8 infinity speakers from the factory as well. The system sounds good, but I would like to get a little more bass into it. I am thinking of adding a jl 10 inch subwoofer or something of the sort. Well, the problem is as follows: went to both best buy and circuit city today to ask them if I would have to change out my factory infinity deck or in dash cd changer, because I don't want to go that route. If I have to change all that then I will not worry with adding more to the system. They went on to say that almost for sure I would have to change out decks and then my cd changer would not work with a new deck. I am just asking if anyone knows if I can add a subwoofer, amp, to the factory equipment. I would really appreciate some help with this. Thanks in advance, John

dont go to best buy or circuit city for an install. i've heard of so many rip off stories. find a reputable car audio shop and they'll help you out. they probably need to take out your factory infinity system amp before wiring in an amp for the sub. i dont know much about factory systems but your local car audio shop will know better than best buy or circuit city. as for choosing a jl sub go with the w3v2 or the w7 if you have the money. if you want the spl of the w7 but dont have the money go with an adire brahma.

Its is possible to hook an amp and sub up to the factory head unit. Like whodi said you should go to a local audio shop to get it done. They will just have to splice into your factory harness and hook up the amp that way. Its very complicated and I am nit sure of all the details but thats basically whats done. Now,,you wont have now were near the sound quality you would have if you got an aftermarket headunit,,but it wll still sound pretty decent. When I had my Grand Cherokee before I got my sport I hade my system w/the factory headunit and it sounded good but sounded 10xs better when I got my pioneer headunit. But like I said it is possible and can be done so dont take no for an answer,,but its easier to get a new headunit. But do what you wnat to do man or whatever your money will allow.

You should not have to get a new head unit. Get an amp that has high level inputs on them so that you can just tap into the speaker wires going to your back speakers for an input signal. If the amp you want does not have high level inputs, you can just get a crossover that has them instead.

an aftermarket HU will have higher voltage RCAs to give better/cleaner signal to the amp. that's why the sound quality and punch is much better with an aftermarket HU. you will also have more control over the sub. unless you get an amp with one of those remote voice coil blowers... or wait i think they are called remote gain controllers or remote bass controllers.

all this can be done, but you are better down the road with a aftermarket head unit. if you get one of these parts that splices into your speaker wire, while still using your factory radio to power your highs, you will lose power to the highs in order to get a signal to your amp. if you discount the factory ampifier all together, you could buy another amp for your highs but when you do this you get alot more power and you get a clearer sound, but your signal, from the speaker outputs on your factory radio, is still compromised because it is doing what is wasn't meant to do. so you have to make a sacrifice somthing, loudness, sound quality, or money. can you see why we just keep building and building, nothing is good enough for my baby... i am also sending you alittle warning about circuit city and the like, in my area you are better off taking it to a local shop that is not a national chain, but i dont know about your area, i am sure you hear some cool systems around, and i am also sure they are ready to brag about how much they saved/spent, just ask where they got their work done.
if you have any other questions, i do all my own work and would be happy to help, send me an email matt

Rajincajungt is right on. I relpaced the factory infinity amp, radio, and cd player all together. A lot more power, If you do go with an aftermarket head unit, make sure it as 2 sets of pre amp outputs, and a sub control, just a little more control over you sound. You can buy your gear from Circuit City because they will most likely be cheaper, But DO NOT get them to install it, Surely you can find someone that can, Or just ask me or Rajincajungt, be glad to help.
