The only major difference between the 98 and 99 Montero Sport is that the 99 Montero Sport was the first year that the MS used an actual Mitsubishi transmission. This tranny featured the INVECSII fuzzy logic shift control that did away with the kick down cable used in the older Montero Sports. The 97-98 Montero Sports used an Asian Warner transmission that is a pretty much bullet proof unit. The gearing of these two units are not identical, therefore the final drive ratio's are also different....

Joel, is that good or bad? What is the difference between the two drive ratios and should this affect my choice in buying one or the other. They apparently changed this for a reason. thanks for the help. I am looking at a 98 xls 4x4 with about 50k. You are probably familiar with it but this one has the compass and other stuff on the dash. Is this a good buy for 13,900? thanks

They changed the final drive ratio to match the gear ratio's in the new Mitsubishi transmission..there's no good or bad. I would actually prefer the time-tested, proven durability of the Asian Warner transmission over the newer Mitsubishi transmission, though the Mitsu transmission doens't have any consistant record of mechanical failures (there are software issues though). The only issue I have with the AW transmission is it's reluctance to downshift with anything less than WOT.
