I had to go to Discount Tire to get a screw pulled out of my tire on Saturday. I was waiting for them to fix my tire when I happened to see a torque chart for all cars and SUVs. I found the Montero Sport section and was surprised to see this. Montero Sport 97-98 torque 105 Montero Sport 99 torque 100 Montero Sport 00-02 torque 85 How come the torque for the 00-02 is only 85. i am not sure if you are driving yours around or not but when you stomp on the pedal, it really doesnt get going untill about 3500-4000 rpms, this is where the horsepower kicks in. the fact that it doenst "go" in the lower rpm range is due to the lack of torque, there are a few things you can do to help a little but you are kinda stuck with the engine you purchased, i am also just speaking from the 3.0l stand point. matt

Surely a M.S. has to have more engine torque than that. In fact I think the 2000 has around 195 foot lbs. of engine torque, stock. 2000utesport

Lug nut torque.
My guess is wheel material composition. Higher (or would it be lower?) alloy. Probably lower since "alloy" could be defined as "to lower purity or value of a metal by mixing with a cheaper metal"!! Damn, and auto manufacturers make us believe through advertising that alloys are the best. Come on, metalurgical dudes, chime in (with 2.5 cents worth, alloy speaking)...
Cheers, Stod
