So, I'm taking my "new" 2000 XLS to the Mitsu dealer for the 3rd time to fix the horn Since its got 51K on it, I'm asking about the 60K service. They give me a pamphlet that tells what they do for $765. It ain't much. It's "check this, check that, and inspect this." Christ, I can look at stuff. The only thing they're actually going to do is: replace plugs, do a transmission service, and a cooling system service. Does anyone out there actually think this is worth $765? So then he says, "Oh yea, and you need to replace the timing belt at 60K as well......that's another $900 all by itself." Any opinions? Do you find that non-Mitsu shops know enough about these to be competent? I'm close to a shop that specializes in imports.....and has a decent reputation.

about 6 months ago my wife took her honda accord to the dealer for an oil change. the service department convinced her to get the 15K mile service. She blew $175.00 on an oil change, tire rotation and fluid inspections also..I was pissed and still am. When we purchased our 03 xls, my service engine check light came on for no reason. after going thru this forum I found out that the warning light can be triggered by not tightening the gas cap. I spoke to 3 different mitsu service department in my area prior to finding this site and all three swore that the only way to turn off that light is by them resetting the ECU for $45.00. I got free oil change every 7500 miles till my car hits 100,000 miles when I purchased the extended warranty. Im pretty sure that other than warranty work, every other oil changes are the only thing that the mitsu service dept will do on my truck...SORRY FOR THE NOVEL...but then again thats just me ;D

Had similar experience with my 2001 XLS at 30,000 miles. The dealer wanted to do a whole laundry list of things, including changing the plugs and the wires. In all they were telling me it would be close to $700.00. I read through my owners manual and then told them what I wanted done as per the Manual. I mentioned that according to the Mitsu., the Iridium plugs shouldn't be changed until 60,000. The service rep. said,.. yeah that is true! Based on what I read in the manual and some things I read here (recomendations from Joel), I got the necessary things done. Joel can give you some good advice as to what shoud be done at the very least.

i recently found out that my car audio shop guy is mitsu certified. in fact the only one certified in this area which means the guy and kid at the dealership..... arent. he says that the iridium plugs on our newer sports can go safely to 100k but wouldn't hurt to do em at 75k. i got a quote locally(not from dealership) on labor to replace plugs and it was only $120. i think the timing belt was about the same. true you get a warranty on all work mitsu does but it comes with a price. i wonder if my friend's work is under warranty even tho he doesnt work for mitsu anymore but still mitsu certified(among lots of other mechanical things)?
