Hi All,
Anyone know how difficult it would be to replace worn front rotors? I have 105,000 miles on our 98 Sport LS 2WD and our mechanic was nice enough to let me know it's getting close to replacing them. He could have forced me to, but told me we can wait a while. Apparently the pads are still half way, but the rotors over time have worn in. Any ideas?

I have posted a topic to which I have had no reply on the Montero Sport General forum. It's not an easy task I have come to find out recently I am breaking down and just taking it to my local mechanic (Ex-Mitsu tech). This is opinion is based on the fact I use to do our 95 4runner's brakes 4WD.

Yeah, I was just attempting to do this. I'm not too car saavy, but I'm also not too wealthy, so I thought I'd attempt this and save some money. I have had the wheel off for two days now, I was trying to get the adapter off that is on the outside of the rotor. After turning the bolts for a while, it didn't feel as if they were getting any looser, so I gave up and thought that I might not be doing the right thing. I have checked at the auto parts stores and there is no manual available for the 98 Montero Sport. I would like to finish this myself if possible. If anyone has ever done this I would appreciate any help! Thanks, -Tron thwilder@southern.edu

On the Montero 4WD models the front rotors are connected to the 4WD drive assembly. In order to get the rotors off you will have to open up part of the front 4WD assembly. It is roughly a 2-3 hr job for someone who knows what they are doing.
That being the case I would highly recomend that you get some quotes from local mech/tech and have them do it for you. Front rotors on the 4WD are a Bit@h to do on your own. However, if you had a 2WD then it would as easy as taking the calipers off and slidding the rotors right off.
Hope this helps, Later

Mine is a 2WD and it's still not as easy as taking the calipers off and sliding the rotor off. There is some sort of adapter piece that still has to come off in order to get the rotor off. I took a picture to a mechanic this morning and he said that although he's not familiar with the montero, he'd never seen that on a 2WD before. He said he could probably do it in an hour or so and recommended that I just bring it in. I've already invested a lot of time in on this & I really don't want to have to pay someone to do it, still I think I'm going to break down and take it in... just too frustrating. Of course, that's unless any of you have any suggestions/advice? -Tron thwilder@southern.edu
