I have about 155k on my 2001 M/S 3.0. Owned since new. Never had lifter/tappet noise At startup,tappets/lifters make noticable noise. They seem to vary in intensity. sometimes quiet sometimes loud enough to hear at start up while in cab. Oil is and has been the acceptable range marks on the dip stick.
Any ideas?

Pretty common at this age, you may need to bleed the lifters out by slowly revving to 3k then snapping the throttle closed then repeat 30 times or so. try that some have used seafoam with good results.

the hydraulic lifters get fill with gunk and they not working properly.....so best way ,,,,clean engine deep.....or just replace lifters..

I used seafoam on my 3.0 and it stopped with in 5 mins. and picked up a couple of mpgs running it through the gas tank.

Try the rev sequence too, that seems to clear them out significantly, at least for me anyways, but now the tapping sounds are back when starting up again. Strangely enough right after I replaced the valve cover gaskets and all the top end stuff on the engine, I didn't have ANY valve tapping sounds for over a month, it was nice but sure as sh@# the tapping returned after a month...curious though..
