Thought I'd contribute for Karma's sake. Here is a pictorial step by step to replace your turn signal stalk. No need to disconnect the battery or have any fear of the airbag deploying. I didn't do it. But maybe I was lucky...LOL
First, you should have a long Philips screwdriver for the steering wheel column screws. Remove the screws, be patient:
Second, take the other two screws right below the steering wheel:
Third, remove the little plastic grommet covers by the bottom dash by the speaker grille on the left and the cover to the right. You can "gently" pry it off with a flathead screw driver or plastic puller tool. Unscrew the screws hidden behind the grommets.
Fourth, there are screws you have to remove the bottom kickpanel. There is a silver cross plate holding the middle of the kick plate when you unscrew the middle screws, just be aware of it and the orientation. Kinda hard to see when you have to screw it back in
OEM, a rare find on eBay
Here is the turn signal stalk exposed
Fifth, unscrew the stalk interface module thingy. There are two screws above and below
Here it is after removing the screws. Be gentle!
As you can see it is one way fit type of interface, like USB. Notice the clip. Be gentle when slipping it off. If I remember, I used a small flat head to move the locking clip. Careful, the locking clip is not attached to the interface. It may drop to the floor, just rember where you put it.
Turn on your Montero Sport, and don't screw anything back yet. Test your blinkers, parking lights, low and high beams, and your hazzards just for good measure. Once everything checks out. Assemble it back together. Great, now you won't look like a jerk on the highway cause, now you can signal!
In my experience, I messed up and should've used the KISS method of troubleshooting ( Keep It Simple Stupid). I immediately jumped to the conclusion that my turn signal was broke becasue I slapped it into a right turn signal one time and it felt loose and the turn signal didn't work anymore. So, when I replaced the turn signal stalk, it still didn't work. I checked the fuse (bottom of the dash right by the dead pedal below the left 4" speaker grille) and yep....it was blown....So check your fuse first it's a blue colored 10A mini fuse. Well, at least I can use this experience to share this with you all!
