Hey guys, first post here even though I've been cruisin without joining for a while. I got my Montero Sport (1998, LS, 4wd, 3.0, rear locker, all the upgrades but leathers seats thank goodness) About 8 months ago and I haven't really had time to adress some of it's issues till now. I have the 8 speaker set up, but only the front driver and passenger door speakers are working. Absolutely no sound out of anything else. The truck has some stupid Pioneer cheap head-unit in (and the stock 10 cd changer although it wont work either) so I'm thinking that might be the source of the problem? I took one of the rear door speakers the other day and hooked it up to the front door system and it worked perfectly! So that's annoying. That means (I think) that all of the speakers are fine, there's just a wiring problem somewhere. Anyone have advice? I'm loving this forum. So helpful!

someone half a$$ed the install, either rewire it yourself or take to a reputable shop.

You need to really go back in there, dump that cheap pioneer head unit and find a head unit with 4 pre outs, you NEED to have a unit that has 2 front preouts and 2 rear preouts, the infinity sound system has speaker amplifiers, the best money can get, and some dumba$$ bypassed the system by cutting out the amplifier! I hate it when audio installers (namely Best Buy) don't know what they are doing.
What probably happened is the installer (or po) managed to cut out the front speakers or maybe they just wired the head unit to the amplifier but the unit probably only had 2 front preouts and lacked the rear ones. In which case you could be lucky and just need to find a 4 preout unit

Ok, so new head unit (definetly hate the old one) with 4 pre outs? I'm more of a bolts and gears guy than an electrician so I'm assuming someone at an audio shop would know what to get me. Also, where do I have an amp?

If you have the infinity system the amp should be back along the rear passenger side wheel well, you can only really see it when the whole cover is off. That should be the amp system then (if not, I've no idea what in the h$#! it is, lol) , which is equipped in the infinity sound system trucks. The wires should--SHOULD be behind the head unit when you pull it out, not sure what they are going to look like as they may been snipped or modified by previous owners and I've never had my head unit out so I couldn't tell you really. When you had sound to just the front speakers, were the tweeters (small speakers opposite side of the window of your sideview mirrors), mid range speakers (on the same level as your knees) and the woofer/low range speakers (the speakers on the bottom part of the door) ALL making sound? if so then the you may be in luck for the wires going to the amplifier to be all in tact. Let us know what you find! ;D

Oh I see. Gosh that's a precarious place for an amp. Looks like a bit of work to get to And no, only the low range speaker making sound :L No crackling or anything from rear doors, tweeters, or in-dash speakers...

So sounds like you do have the infinity amp somewhere. Like I said, that thing in the pictures may or may not be the infinity amp, but I have yet to find anything else that would suggest otherwise currently.
Here's what should be happening in the case of the infinity sound system Cd player (6 or 1), Tape, Radio \ | / Head unit (stock) / \ 2 front preouts & 2 rear preouts \ / Infinity Amp | | L & R tweeter & L & R rear speaker (only 1 each side) | L& R mid range | L & R low range
Now somewhere in that line there is a cut no doubt
What they probably did was yank the wire for the front low range speakers, and just let lay there so reconnection shouldn't be too bad.
In the mean time of your diagnosis check out Crutchfield.com, better prices, better quality than best buy, and they make sure you buy the correct head unit (4 pre-outs total for the infinity system)
Best of luck ;D keep us posted!
