Hi guys
I have a 98 Montero Sport, 103k on it. When cold, it takes lots of cranking to start and when it starts it coughs a bit before stabilizing at idle. After that it runs fine. No DTC, No CEL. Any idaes?

Mine does that but it gets better when the oil is newer. I run 5w-30 and am loosing compression due to rings. May not be your issue but consider it a bump.

I would second the chance of compression being the culprit. Is there a way you can test it yourself?
My 98 Sport with 155k starts no problem (when I don't kill my battery!) Although it wasn't always like this. When I first bought it I never thought of checking the battery, the last owner had some lawnmower (well...it was really small) sized battery in there, it literally took up half the battery tray. So that was my first replacement. Got a Duralast Gold highest cold cranking amp battery they that would fit.
I think I ended up with a 950 cca battery? It starts my engine in a less than a second sometimes, and when cold, maybe 1-2 seconds? Although when cold-started my engine will sometimes 'skip' and the engine rpms drop instantly to like 500 rpms and then it shoots back up. I'm assuming just a timing adjustment by the ecu.
