My 95 Montero has just gone over 100K miles and as expected the Engine warning emmissions light has come on. Does anyone know how to turn this warning sensor light off without taking it to the dealer? ( who wants 140 bucks to switch it off.)

You'll need to gain access to the back of the instrument cluster. It's as simple as removing the 3 screws on the cluster cover, disconnecting the switches on the cluster (setting the cover aside) , and removing the screws that hold down the cluster to the dash. From there, you can pull the cluster out as far as you can without overstretching the wiring in the back- then take a look behind it through the windshield to locate the switch that controls the Maintenance Light. It's a typical 2 position black switch. Whateaver position it's in now, just switch it to the other side. That'll turn the light off for another 50K. If you're having trouble locating the switch, you can disconnect some/all of the wiring to the gauge unit so that you can remove it completely. NOTE: This would be an excellent time to replace any bulbs that may have burnt out most notibly any of the 4wd indicator bulbs.

Or be patient and wait. It turns itself off after a few thousand miles.

Hmmm... to my knowledge, the Maint Req'd light on the dash does NOT switch off by itself.... are you sure about this? . As far as i know, it is switched on by mileage every 50K and has to be manually switched off. NOTE THAT THE MAINT REQ'D LIGHT IS DIFFERENT THAN THE CHECK ENGINE/SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT. Joel, CA
