I have a 2002 montero sport limited with 17,000 miles. The sport was in storage in a climate controlled garage in socal for a couple years and I'm getting mixed feelings about the timing belt. Not sure if I should replace it or not with only having 17,000 miles on it. Any opinion are welcomed. Thanks

I would defiitely replace the timing belt, the rubber loses its integrity over time just from sitting.

Everything may appear fine but it won't take long before you start having problems once you start driving it. So, yes, absolutely replace it. 12-13 years of sitting? Yea, that's bad. Hoses, boots (CV, t-case shifter, etc.), belts and tires. Anything with rubber needs to be checked and replaced if necessary. If you choose to NOT replace something you'll need to keep a close eye on it - pretty much forever. Have EVERYTHING flushed - and I mean EVERYTHING - BEFORE you start driving it around. Do a THROUGH check of the brake system before driving it anywhere. Moisture in brake fluid causes rust internally, rubber parts shrink and take a 'set' and that's a LONG time to be sitting. I have had vehicles come out of long periods of storage that had brand new brake systems when they were put to bed, and a month or two latter they fail while you're driving. Everything with a seal - especially seals subject to pressure - will have to be checked and watched and or replaced. Water pump always seems most likely to die within a few months of getting one out of storage. Sounds nice, but you have some work to do. Edward

Thanks Everyone for the replies. I went and ordered the full kit with the water pump. A shop that works on Mitsubishi will charge me $280.00 for the labor. Actually the Sport was only stationary for 2 years. It's been in southern California garaged while I've been traveling. I had the fuel system stabilized before it sat and it runs like new with no hiccups. I will definitely have the brake system checked before I start to drive it on any major road. I haven't yet drove it beyond around the block a few times. It's almost a time capsule because it still has the dealer plastic under the floor mats lol It really is brand new condition. You can virtually eat off the engine.

HI,
Noticed this thread and have questions. Where did you get a "full set" and what does that consist of? I was on Rock Auto and looked for the full set.
My vehicle has 115k and needs all the parts. I would appreciate all advice on quality and brands, looking for good parts. I spoke with a shop today and they quoted for labor to install.
Montero Sport is fun nice ride. Wanna keep it rolling.
Thanks for help.
