I have a 3000GT that I'll be converting to RWD and I need to know if there is a manual 2WD trnasmission available, and if not then I need to know if a manual 4WD transmission can be used without a transfer case. I expect you'll want the V5MT1-6 or newer. That's the Montero/Montero Sport 5-speed - 96/97+. Earlier versions were a little problematic. The original early/mid-90s M/T from the Montero had issues - that was a different M/T, BTW. There were two 5-speeds. Aluminum case and case iron case. The V5MT1 is the cast iron truck transmission. Heavy but rock solid. The V5MT1-6 will bolt to the 96/97-05 3.0L since that was a factory option for '97-'99 on the Sport. It will also bolt to the '96/97-05 3.5L - you will need ALL the bell housing related parts (including shields, bolts, etc) as some parts are not available from the factory and you DO need them but it does bolt up fine. I run a '02 3.5L on my '97 V5MT1-6 Sport 5-speed. You, obviously, will need the 2WD version or a 4WD version and the 2WD tail-shaft assembly. I'd look for the 3.0/3.5L 2WD 5-speed. That SHOULD be the V5MT1 and make sure its at least a 6. Also make sure you get the bell housing and all the associated parts that come with it. There are differences between the M/T and A/T that I ran into that required a little fab work with the shields, but nothing a pair of tin snips wouldn't fix. What year is the 3.0L in your GT? That does make a difference. The '96 and older 3.0L is a different engine than the late '96/97 3.0/3.5L. Stuff from the latter will not bolt to the former - such as the bell housing. Also, there are differences between the car and truck 3.0/3.5L and turbo/non-turbo versions. I'm assuming you're running a NA engine, but if that was AWD then yours is probably the twin turbo version. You're best bet would be to talk to the GT/Eclipse guys and also you might want to post this question on 4x4 Wire under the Montero/Montero Sport section. Those guys have a lot more experience with the mid-90s car stuff in addition to the transmissions used. Edward

That was very informative, thank you. I have a '94 base model. Did you say that the V5MT1 won't mate to it if it's that old? Also are the V5MT1 and the V5MT1-6 different transmissions?

That was very informative, thank you. I have a '94 base model. Did you say that the V5MT1 won't mate to it if it's that old? Also are the V5MT1 and the V5MT1-6 different transmissions? The V5MT1 is the transmission. The -n is the revision. So, the V5MT1-1 is the first version. The V5MT1-6 is the sixth version. I think their up to 8. I know they're up to 7. Oh, BTW, the T in MT1, signifies that the transmission is a truck transmission - heavy duty - and came from their commercial truck transmission plant rather than the plant where the car transmissions are produced. Just some useless trivia. As I understand all this from doing my retrofit of the '02 A/T 3.5L into a '97 3.0L M/T Sport, the engine bolt patterns changed in '96. So, a 3.0/3.5L '96/'97-05 bell housing won't bolt to a pre-'96/'97 3.0/3.5L engine. You would need the correct bell housing. I also believe, based on what I've heard the guys on the Wire discussing, the V5MT1 transmission itself WILL bolt to EITHER bell housing. I'm working off memory here, so bear with me ... Everything pre-'96/97 is different than the '96/97-05 stuff. Starter, bell housing, flywheel, clutch, etc. You need to be careful with the '96/'97 model years. That cut-off varies with models. Some of the '96 models use '97+ configuration and some '97 models use the '96 and earlier configuration. But the '96/'97 year cut is accurate for all Mitsus that used the 3.0/3.5L engine. Problem is fingureing out when made the cut in what year and what part of the year. I think in your case, its safe to assume you need the early '90s bell housing setup. Figure you'd know already if someone transplanted an entire '98 drive train into your GT. lol!! Like I said, pester the guys on 4x4 Wire. They'll almost certainly know which bell housing and associated parts you need. The Montero Sport didn't come out until '97 - after the change to the 3.0/3.5L - so everything from '97-'05 is interchangeable. No one here needs to know the answers to the questions your asking. I only know what I know because of working on the ECM/PCMs and retrofitting a 3.5L into a '97 Sport. I had to figure out all the wierd year thing changes because my '97 is really a September '96 shipped from Japan and they occasionally used '96 Montero parts - so, I'm never sure if I should be working on a '96-older or a '97-newer Mitsu.
