Hello everybody,
I am having a problem with a 2wd 2002 montero sport. When I put it in reverse there is a loud clunk and the truck doesn't move. If I put it in neutral it won't roll at all. The forward drive gears all seem to be working fine. The truck has 134k miles on it and 8100 miles ago I had the trans flushed at the dealer to take care of the chatter/vibration problem.
I was just wondering if you guys had any ideas what it might be. I love my truck and don't have any desire to replace it, but I am sure the shop will just try and sell me a new trans, which I can't really afford.
Thank you all for any help you can provide.

Yes it was at my local mitsu dealer, They should have put the correct trans fluid in it.

Double check the fluid levels to make sure it isn't over or under. Do you know if it shifting through all four gears in drive.

It is pulled nose in into a parking spot, so I can't drive it at all. I have cycled it through the gears manually and let it roll forward a bit each time but I can't get it out of the spot right now so I can't drive it. The fluid level looks good.

Your problems are reminiscent of a few of my issues. Mine is shifting hard in reverse, but primarily when coming directly from Drive. Other than that the gears are all working fine, but my display in the dash is screwy. R and N light up together when in R, and D and R light up together when in N. Pretty sure it's the Reverse/Neutral safety switch that has gone out on mine.

Now I am really confused. I went out to see if I had the same display issues as you and the truck went into reverse with no clunk, and backed up fine for a few feet. I have to head to work right now, and I don't want to drive it if until I know that it isn't going to screw anything else up worse. After work I may take it around the block and see if all of the forward gears are working properly.
Thank you guys for the help so far.
