I have an '03 Montero that I absolutely love. It has enough power for me and accelerates pretty well. However, when driving at moderate speeds (25-35mph) and then when I try to accelerate hard it takes forever for the car to do anything. It seems to just start thinking and then it downshifts and off we go. The engine does not "hesitate", it starts accelerating slowly for a few seconds then it finally decides to down shift and it accelerates faster.
Is this normal for the tranny program to take so long? Is it because it has "learned" to shift this way as part of the "adaptive" transmission computer? Is it because the response of the "throttle by wire" is slow?
Thanks for your help.

It's more than likely due to the adaptive shift control of the transmission. The throttle by wire uses multiple position sensors to determine what the driver input is as well as double checking one another for accuracy. If you're very easy on the throttle- the shift control will adapt to it to give you best fuel economy.
