Well, it happened again. I pulled into my apartment, put it in park, and the harmonic balancer fell off. Another crank sprockets dowl pin turned into dust like the last one and started freeturning till it ground off enough metal to start backing the bolt out. At this point I'm pretty certain the crank is unbalanced, likely due to the shoddy repair a shop did to my crank snouts threads back in 2016. This issue plus the presence of all that copper and metal in the oil, and a new engine shaking issue that has started to crop up after replacing the harmonic balancer again leads me to believe it's time for a new/used engine or an engine rebuild.
I am in the process of tearing it all down to pull the engine and see what's the ruckus down there. More fun ahead I'm sure.
In case anyone is wondering why I didn't feel the harmonic balancer wobbling long before it fell off, the engine has always had a vibration about it since I got it. The repair that was made to the cranksnout in 2016 was made shortly after I got it so I thought this was normal. But now I'm certain it's not.

I don't know if you frequent any other forums. Or if posting info from another is allowed here. Anyway, the Mitsu forum on expeditionportal has a recent post on someone rebuilding a Dodge Raider (Mitsubishi Montero). There was a god bit of engine work done. The Raider has the 3.0l 6G72 V6 engine. There may be some tips that may be useful. www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/pitchblack-rally-recce-raider-build.210863/

In the time it's taking to get it here I could have already rebuilt it twice over. Hindsights 20/20 they say. Thanks for the link, I'll have to give it a good read.

Please advise where you purchased the "certified used engine". Just for future reference π€·ββοΈ. Also,, install the torque converter on the transmission prior to the engine. Check the trans pump seal, if still good ππ hopefully. Insure the converter is fully inserted into the pump, by rotating it until it clunks into place. Good luck with your project π. G.

Some good tips there gabe, thanks. Before purchasing the engine I did a background check on the company and they are a legitimate establishment that's certified by the BBB as A+. The transmission seal is good, don't think I'll mess with it lest I anger the transmission gods. I honestly forgot to remove the torque converter bolts before pulling the engine but thankfully there was plenty of room to pull it.

Forgot to mention the new/used engine has only 120k on it.
I've got new valve cover gaskets, melling lash adjusters, valve stem seals, cam seals (front and back), both crank seals (if I even need them), oil pan seal kit, new harmonic balancer, water pipe o-rings, timing kit, and new engine mounts. Hopefully I'll have this one buttoned up pretty well when it goes in.
I'm kinda excited to see how smooth it'll run without a buggered crankshaft.

Finally got my monty back on the road. God that company was annoying, they kept "forgetting" to file the paperwork to have it shipped. In the end me and my dad wound up driving hours to do a dock pick up from a warehouse. Installing it was a pain in the butt trying to get everything lined up by myself.
This engine is butter smooth though so that's good.
