Hey all! Been awhile since I sold my 2003 Montero Sport after I drove it to Alaska in 2012 for a job. I’m back in California and got a killer deal on a 2002 Montero Limited that needs some work but will serve as my “going to town” car at my house in the mountains. I’ve had five Mitsus in the past so it’s nice to have one again, even if it is old and tired. Should be a fun project and will give me an opportunity to show my 10 year old sons how to work on cars a little.
For now I have a question. On every Montero Sport I’ve ever owned, both 3.0 and 3.5 models, I’ve had to change out the rear cam seal o-rings. This one is no different. Plenty of leaking oil. But after power washing the engine I was feeling around the back of the heads and the passenger side one feels like the eye-shaped plug I’m familiar with. But the back of the driver’s side has a protruding casting that is nothing like the passenger side or any others I recall. The guy at the dealership said that is a cam position sensor housing and it does not use an o-ring at all but silicone sealant instead.
Does this sound right? Anyone know the definitive answer? Does Joel still post here?
Thanks all!
Mike

Found a full shop manual for a 2003, which is for a 3.8L but visually is nearly the same as the 6G74 in my 2002 on the back of the left cylinder head. So I guess the left side does have a cam position sensor. O-ring on passenger side has been replaced. I will monitor the left side for leaks now that it's been pressure washed. Here's the diagram from the shop manual.
