Any tire pros here?? - Installed BFG 265-75/R16 AT/KOs on my Sport about 5,000 miles ago. They have been great and have run smoothly...until I had my 30K service. Tire rotation was done and I had an unbalanced tire shimmy from 35mph+.
Took the MS to my tire store for a re-balance after the rotation and now I've got 5.75" in length of weights on the left side (up from 2") and 5" of weights on the right (up from 1.75"). No vibration now...BUT why would a tire rotation cause such an unbalanced situation??
Simple rotation...rear to front; tire pressure change from 30 psi rear to 33 front. Am I looking at a bigger problem (front suspension problems)?? Or, just a tire pressure change that would throw the balance off that far?
Thanks for any input.
Cheers, Stod

All 2K and older Montero's as well as all Montero Sports require a special hub adapter mounted on the wheel assembly prior to tire balancing. Without it...you will never achieve proper balancing. Your local dealership should have the tool...just be sure that the technician who's performing the balance actually uses it!
The tool number is MB991820. It is a Mitsubishi Standard Issue tool meaning all dealerships HAVE to carry it. If your dealership doesn't have it, make 'em get it!

Thanks, Joel.
Weird thing is that when the BFGs were installed at the tire store about 5k miles ago, I did not have a balance/vibration problem at all, for 5k miles (I doubt the tire store has the adaptor). The balance problem only showed up after the Mitsu dealer did the tire rotation (@30k service, about 5k on the tread of all four).
Oh well, I'll chalk it up to the tire gods. Will also see what happens a few miles down the road after the tire store did the re-balance (to date, no vibration).

It took me 3 tries before I found a place with the correct mounting plate to get my tires balanced correctly. But that doesn’t really sound like the problem you have. I could be way off the wall on this but I just read an article on how water can get in to your tires from the air system they use to inflate your tires. If not properly drained condensed moisture can collect in the air hose and then get injected in to you tire’s in some cases you might collect enough to actually cause a balance problems. Just a thought.

Dano, I've heard of that type of problem before...the water in the air. The tire store did a re-balance under their warranty, but I've still got a slight "flutter" in the tires at lower speeds (35-45 mph). No problem at highway speeds, after the re-balance. I'll probably have the dealer do another balance (unfortunately paying for it) at the next service so that it can be done with the Mitsu hub adaptor.

I dont understand why Sports have to have a special adaptor to get a correct tire balance. What makes them any diff from any other car? Also, when I got my BFGs put on at Sears they told me I had 2 wheels that were warped,,,would they think that b/c they dont have the correct tool to balance or would they be on the money?

THat may be the case...if the wheel assembly is not properly mounted on the balancer..it would appear that the wheel is warped when it spins. Joel , CA
