cwic,
For a 265/60R17, calculation would be:
(((265 x .60) x 2) / 25.4) + 17 = 29.52" (considered a 30" tire).
To get your width divide the 265 by 25.4. (=10.43").
Height is the 265 x .60, times 2 (sidewall above and below the wheel) and then convert the millimeters to inches (divided by 25.4), then add the inches of the wheel (17).
p.s. Thanks 02XLSinPA - great info in your table, excellent for a quick reference.
Cheers, Stod

I'll ask again here, Is an 80 or 85 serier tire a bad idea for a mont sport? Will I be able to find a sidewall that is stiff enough? Will I need a lift to run 255/80 or 85/16 on a 2001xs(32.5&33.0in tires) Or does this size even exist? Clay

Clay, If you want to run a 255/80-16, that would be a 32" tire (only 10" width)...no problem fitting. If you want to run a 255/85-16, that would be a 33" tire (still, only 10" width)...maybe you would need to do some suspension mods for the 33" height. It's my understanding that a 32" height is max for a stock MS suspension without doing any lifting.
What are you planning: offroad (AT-type tire), or street? If you want AT, I'd go with a 265/75-16. It would be a toss up between the BFG and Bridgestone, IMO. Others run Michelin, a tire from which I've never had any good mileage (same with Yoko). As far as an 80 series, I'm not sure. I would think that an AT tire would have stiff enough sidewalls that would hold up offroad...don't know. For offroad, why not go to a 265?

How do you quote? I wrote in"tire size" I now know 33 wont fit.Can only afford tires or suspenion lift before winter. could'nt find 255/80 but did find 255/85, too big, so I may go with 265/75 but was mainly looking for winter tires so thats why I did'nt want to go wider. I really an trying to make my truck a cross trainer not too far 1 way or the other so these tires on my stock rims would be for winter/off-roading so I'll take your advice and look at BFG and bridgestone in 265/75 Clay

I thought my tires were big when I bought my 99 XLS. But they are too small to be listed on this chart. 265/70/15 A friend of mine just bought a 02 LS, and it just has 255/70/15. I guess they don't think we want big wheels here in Chicago.

I am considering getting 265/65/16s the next time i get new tires...so it can be slightly wider and less sidewalls. Will this size fit the stock rims?

Follow the formulas and or posts above, and yes. 265mm (~10") width, no problem. R16, on 16" rims, uuhhmm, no problem.

The one tire that Michelin makes that lasts for EVER is the Michelin LTX A/T. Put a set on the wife's MS 2001 XLS 4WD in the size 265/75R16 at 3,000 miles. We are now at 35,000 miles and have half tread left. They start with 17/32nds of tread, so we still have 8.5/32nds left, which is quite a bit!!
They are not as aggressive as the BFG A/T ko or as aggressive as the Bridgestone Revo A/T, but I think they last longer.
The BFG A/T does better in snow than the michelin does. The michelin last a bit longer. The Revo does better in rain than the other two. Not sure how the Revo does in the snow, haven't had them in the snow yet. Leaving for Vancouver, Canada and may find some snow in the higher elevations where we'll be off-roading on the ARB American Outback Expedition.
I think they'll do good in the snow because they have a lot of sipes.
I'd definately go with 265/75R16 tires again if I were stock. But, I have 2" of lift and the next set of tires are going to be 285/75R16 or 295/75R16, not sure which...depends on what the wife and budget thinks.

Ayup, I do remember you and I am one in the same from JU. Senior Moderator CerOf from www.jeepsunlmited.comPut my wife in a Montero Sport because they run forever and don't break down. SO I lurkand post over here too. 32x11.5 should fit, the width might be a slight problem, but not a huge issue, if you rub it will be at full lock with the tire totally stuffed.
