Currently I have BFG Dueler HT tires on my 2000 MS Limited. A friend of mine has off road tires on his 2000 MS limited and I love the look of it. Are there advantages/disavantages to having off-road tires?

MT's will wear down faster on pavement, they make alot more noise, they also provide less grip on pavement. They also go like a mother off road.

off road tires do their best off road. the HT tires you have work best on road. there are AT tires that combine on and off road abilities. and there are good and bad AT tires. check out tirerack.com for more info.

Not always true. Average set of Michelin LTX A/T tires will get you 60,000 miles. At the rate they are wearing on our Montero Sport XLS 4WD in the 265/75R16 variety we will get 73,000 miles on them. BFG M/T km will get you about 45,000 miles and the A/Tko by BFG will get you around the same. Michelin LTX A/S 235/65R17 that I had on my WJ Grand Cherokee 4x4 only went 25,000 miles before having to be replaced. So, I'd get what you want that suits the majority of your driving. If you ever do go "off-roading" then I'd get an A/T tire. They perform really well. Our Sport performs MUCh better with the Michelin LTX A/T tires than the stock tires by far!! The michelin's are made in sizes from stock heigh to a 32" tall tire. MT's will wear down faster on pavement, they make alot more noise, they also provide less grip on pavement. They also go like a mother off road.

I know that's not always true but why would you buy a truck tire that wears out fast

Every truck tire that I've purchased has lasted a minimum of 48,000 miles and if you average in the Michelin LTX A/T I have now, that average will hit 59,000 miles.
That is FAR longer than any passenger car tire or other type of tire for an SUV I've ever seen.
Between myself and the rest of my family (large family and all have at least 1 SUV of varying makes and models from Navigator, F350, Tahoe, Suburban, F150, Pathfinder, Exploder, and Chevy 1500 truck....they all go through tires every 25K~30K tops.
I keep telling them to spend the extra money. My brother-in-law with the tahoe is going to go with BFG MTkm tires for his next set based on my experience. he would go with the Michelin LTX A/T tires, but they only make up to a 32" tall tire and he runs 33" tires.
