I used to compete professionally in the car stereo industry. Made it to IASCA invitational world finals in 1999. However, I am wanting to install about 2000 watts of power with 3 amps on my truck. Has anyone had Alternator problems, wiring melting from the alternator, anything like that? want to know what I am getting into before the install.

Your alternator puts out about 175 amps- maybe less depending on factory options- if that helps you get started.

Will installing a cap lessen the strain on your alternator?

I dont know how you got 175 amps, but the stock alternator amp rating for all trim models is 90 amps. Getting a refurb Mitsu alternators are rated around 85 amps.
Trucks that have towing packages installed usually get a bigger alternator between 110 and 140 amps...
If you're getting 175 amps, you must have paid big bucks for that sucker...

Will installing a cap lessen the strain on your alternator? No. Caps were not designed to aid in voltage problems. The only thing that can be done is purchasing a new battery(deep cycle) and upgrading the BIG 3. Next would be a High output alternator. Of course running 1/0 guage wire helps.

that alternator is in a tight spot though huh? did them all except that. Give it a shot. It's the more important of the 3 FYI.

The alternator on my truck it 85amps, and AFAIK its the original one.
If you want a bigger alternator you could probably get one from one of the new 3.8l motors. They have 125amps I beleive. Or there is a guy selling one on ebay 175amps refurbed for a good price.
