I have a 1997 Montero Sport with almost 90K miles. The dealership is telling me that I need to get the timing belt changed. Is this true? Can I wait a while? The cheapest I have found to get this done is ~$500, and if this is not necessary I don't want to spend the money.
Thanks........Bryan

I think the t-belt is recommended to be changed every 60-80k on the average. If it hasn't been done on yours it might be something to consider. Because when it breaks your vehicle no longer runs and you risk the chance of it doing more damage to the rest of your internals which equals $$$$$.
I haven't seen the MS engine yet but on my 88 Mazda I was able to change it myself (with a lot of cussin' and a couple of hours of effort) Now my Honda was a different story, but I was rebuilding the engine so it was much more accessable.

Change the belt! Mitsu has a motor that if the belt brakes it could ruin your motor. Some manufacturer engines this would not happen to. Spend the $500 or so instead of the $3500 or so!
