So to confirm that I am understanding this correctly I would be doing more harm than good by installing a high flow cat and larger exhaust? Would even just replacing the stock muffler with a (favorite muffler bran here) do harm?
What can be done to improve the low end torque? Other than installing manual hubs? (which are on order if they would ever show up)

My guess is gains on the top end, probable small loss at low rpm (where it really seems to hurt most)... UNLESS you are planning on changing other things.... or your stock muffler and cat are somehow plugged up etc. I know exhaust mods are usually the first economical way to build some power, but the only way you get gains is if what you do is better than Mitsu the first time. Mitsu knew they had to get a wee little 3.0/3.5 to haul around a truck, so we are fighting for the crumbs here.
If you go bigger pipes, you will probably have to do other things to the tuning, intake, etc... to get any gains at usable RPMs.
But you never know until you try something different...
Let's see...more engine power at low RPM= more cubic inches higher compression ratio forced induction - turbo or supercharger nitrous intake/exhaust timing - cam ignition timing - fuel delivery - exhaust - ??$$$ ... smaller tires (NOT!), shorter gears in the trannies, drop 1500 lbs... at least we get to burn less gas than some, but somehow that isn't as much fun!

OK thanx for the explanation. I was just checking out what was available for these trucks, and could only come up with the HKS exhaust, and Injen intake so far... I was just curious to see if anyone has it and would recommend it before I dish out $600. I read up on the website that this was the best system, and I figured that the Japanese usually have some nice parts as far as performance. hksusa.com/categories/more.asp?id=1715

How about gutting the pre-cats on a 2000 MS 3.0........or have you already said this won't work??? 3000gts have done this to sucess

A 3000gt is made to run at higher RPMs than the Sport. When you move to a large exhaust it will move the power band up higher in the RPMs. back pressure = torque down low
less back pressure = more torque up high
I don't like to burst anyone's bubble, but come on...it's a 3.0L engine in an almost 5,000lbs vehicle!
Get the muffler that sounds good to you, but realize, it is only for the sound. What you gain will lower your 0-60 time by MAYBE .5 seconds with an intake and exhaust on a 3.0L which will mean you can now do 0-60 in 10.5 seconds as opposed to 11seconds.

tof95 search here for all your intake question look under all topics with intake as subject. I wouldnt pay 500-600bucks for a hks are any prefab kit. I went to local mufler masters paid around 240-260 for 2 5inch tips non stainless chrome plated 100bucks each and they ran 2.25 from cat to the back streight pipe with a y to make it dual. It`s probley the loudest montero on the planet lol and it sounds pretty damn good like a small block v8 ideling but you can tell it`s a v6 when you get down on it. I went from stock to streight to a megaflow muff back to streight. Alot people have differant opions about it most like it some dont. It`s very loud you will stand out being one the only person with and ms thats super loud in town. I have attracted cops late at night in big empty towns. Sometimes it hard to talk at a moderate voice level cause all you can here is bahhhhhhhhhhhhh I need some dynamat xtream layerd all around my vehical to make the inside quiter. even thou im geting older and the bahhhh noise can get alittle anoying sometimes I like it and so do alot of other people. Alot of people thank i have a slow loud suv which it is but alot people are surprized by the 3.0`s performance it`s not as slow as they thought it was. as far as intake spectra would be the way i go and you can make a intake for a civic work look in the intake topics to get the part number it`s only 40bucks or so at the local autoparts store

so i guess the best idea is to goto your local muffler shops and see what they recommend?

keep in mind the spectra is just the tube it is not a kit for the ms and will need to be cut to fit. other parts will have to come from other places(filter and adaptor plate) but u can put it together for cheaper then u can buy one. clay

this is a pretty good post. now i don't feel so bad that i won't be able to put that megan m-n1 muffler on my car cause it has a 2.5" inlet and i was thinking of getting 2.5" piping to the cats. right now it looks like i will be paying $350 for a muffler/installation job, and i have to provide a muffler tip. the guy carries flowmaster/magnaflow mufflers, but i think i will push for the magnaflow so it will match my exhaust tip from magnaflow (which i need to buy). i should now be getting 2.25" piping from the cats, and i do have an apexi intake already, so maybe my low end performance won't go down too much.

hey bw - i just put on a gisbson exhaust. their claim is better low end torque and i think it's helped alot.

the custom exhaust is gonna cost $400 for everything after installation. plus i already ordered a magnaflow exhaust tip. it's due to arrive on the 24th, and then i'm gonna get the entire thing installed on the 25th. i did read about the gibson exhaust and it sounds like a pretty good system.

Everything is actually making sense...but i have one quick question. Im thinking about installing a flowmaster in place of the stock muff. on a 2000 3.0....now my question, Will it sound like a ricer?? or will it actually have a deep tone to it? A buddy of mine put a flow on his 5 cyl Colorado and it has a deep tone at idle but the tone increase once he gets on it. I just don't wanna be the guy that has a MS that sounds like a civic with a fart can. What does everyone suggest?

i shall find out tomorrow when i get mine installed. 2.25" or 2.50", depending on if i already have 2.25" pipes stock (then i would go 2.50") with a flowmaster or magnaflow muffler. my magnaflow exhaust tip came in today.
