Thanks for the quick response. Have you noticed any improvements with the new intake?

a little power, a bit better gas mileage, like another 1mpg and louder under the hood. but it sure cleaned up the engine bay. it's less cluttered. and the intake pipe is shiney, ooohhh, aaahhh. it was worth it just for the looks.

I actually bought a very similar kit on ebay just as Limited 0three did, but only from a different company. It was only $5.99 plus shipping so I just bought it to see what kind of difference it makes. It came with the filter and MAF adapter only. I havent installed it yet though because the box it came in says its not CARB certified and that its for off-road or demonstrational use only. I have heard rumors indicating some inspection stations in Texas wont let vehicles pass that are equipped with performance air intakes. Has anyone had issues with this in their state or does anyone now if performance intakes will cause a vehicle to fail the emissions test? I would like to find out for sure before I start working under the hood.

i am eagerly waiting the arrival of a cold air intake kit for an eclipse. it should show tmrw. as of right now i have a slight moddification to the sotck airbox for my 01 3.5L Limited. i replaced the intake pipe with one from autozone, took the resonator (as the manual calls it) off the front of the air box so there is just a hole there, and put a small filter on the block where the camshaft blowoff pipe came from. i felt a significant gain in power, it gave me another 1000rpm before shifting and improved the gas mileage atleast 2 per gallon. also my run to 60 is under 10 seconds. i cant wait to see what the cold air kit does for me.
also i dont know how strict smog is in texas but in cali where i live i wont have any chance of passing smog and just plan to switch back to stock when i have to go.

Sounds like an interesting set up you have there zedman86. I never thought of doing that. I actually bought a performance air filter and adapter plate for my 2000 3.0 MS and I'm debating on whether I should just put it on or wait and get the intake pipe from autozone and put that all on together. I kinda wonder how much difference the pipe is going to make vs. the stock rubber air hose. At any rate I will need to figure out a way to secure everything so it doesnt bounce around under the hood. Also, I talked to a guy at an inspection station about performance air intakes and whether or not it will hinder the emissions test and he said 1996 and newer vehicles just get hooked up to there computer through your onboard computer and they take the readings that way. I heard this once before and it sounds like its a lot quicker for them to do than on older vehicles. Does anyone know more about this? I agree zedman86, i'm sure the best way to make sure you pass is to just switch back to stock but I would sure like to be able to just leave the intake on if I can.

Ok, so I took my 2000 MS XLS to get some routine maintenance done and asked him if he knew much about intakes. He told me that they will usually make your engine run a bit richer which may not make you pass the emissions test. I thought about that and it makes since. As stated before I guess the only way to beat the test is to just put the stock air box back on before you go to the state inspection place. Not really a hard thing to do but sounds a bit like a pain though!

thanks for your help. I was actually looking at the HKS kit at one time but wasnt sure if it was carb legal. Yes it definately is more money than the off brand kit I bought. Hey, let us know how the cold air intake goes when you install it.

well the intake has been in for about 3 days now and wowwee it is loud! it added about 300-400 more rpm to the ideal **** point as the tranny sees it. so it shits around 5500rpm now. loads louder and it throws me back in the seat more. havent had a chance to check the mileage yet but so far with not driving too well since i am addicted to the roar of the intake i would say that i am averaging about 14-15 per gallon ill post a real number when i hit the gas station again. i am very happy with the intake and grounding kit that i have installed. here are some pics. photobucket.com/albums/v149/bullit86/montero/

ok zed. U have to have seen my 1/4 time post. U should try a few runs to see how close u can come. also the fastest 0-60 i have done is on here somewhere. we have the same engine and have done similar mods so it would be good to compare. Wish u would have dynoed ur truck before u did any mods cause I didnt do mine till after the intake so I have no baseline. I an trying to not get too excited but my cams are supposed to be here by the end of the month but I have been hearing that since march. Then there will be more draging and dynoing fun. Clay

i think that i was getting about the 9.5ish....hard to count in exact numbers. that was also with the engine running waaay too rich. causing a gas mileage of 12.7 on one tank but that was also due to the fact that i loved to hear it roar. now its back to full stock and has had the engine code fixed. later next week ill be running to 60 in 4.8 with the STI i am waiting to recieve and the montero goes back to my mom. thanks alot guys for all the help with this car, ill post on here if any problems arise with the montero.
