I need some Help - I am going to do an exhaust on my '01 xls. Can anyone tell me what size the exhaust pipe is?? Also does anyone have suggestions - are high -flow converters worth it? and which brand muffler sounds best from anyones experience??

Flowmaster has the deepest smoothest sound IMHO. Don't know the piping diameter. Have yet to get around to upgrading my exhaust.

I believe the cats on a Montero Sport are about as high flowing as you can get. Due to the displacement, I don't think a high flow cat will wake up the engine much more. I think a good exhaust system coupled with an intake will help.
I have to say I'm partial to magnaflows. Flowmaster has a tin like sound. Also, around here, Flowmaster is a dime a dozen.

yep, my flowmaster is a nice and rich 2.5" intake into 2, 2" outlets. the only thing i have an issue with is the level of exhaust noise inside the truck filling in between bass hits. I would like to revert to stock because of this unless I add more horse power to liven up the grunt and have something to show off. It is kind of a pain to take long (3-4hour) trips on the highway with the constant "mmmmmmmmmmm mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm mmmmmmmmmm" of the engine at 3,000 rpms. REAL BAD when towing something rather heavy and your engine is yelling at you for choosing to go up a good sized hill... makes you wish you had a good ol' beefy v-8. But on the other hand, its fun for stop and go traffic in and around town.

I just put a 2.5" in/out on my MS and it's a too loud for my taste inside the cab. Outside it almost sounds like a VR6 motor unleashed. I may see if I can send it back and try the edelbrock muffler. JMO

Only gains with my mods (signature below) are slight and noticable above 5k rpms... except the noise. Its loud and a bit droning and my set up is with the biggest magnaflow muffler in place of the stock-- PLUS a second 4" magnaflow muffler w/tip. The only thing I could've done to make it quieter is to put some bends back into the setup. Most of mine are less than 45' and really its pretty much straight back after the Ypipe. My pipes are slightly larger than stock and the thickest stainless I could work with...
Would I do it again? No, but I had to replace with something as my stock system got busted up. The gains are small unless you are doing something in addition... maybe one day a turbo will come to roost under my hood if I'm a good boy...

Oh, if you have to replace the converter anyway, go for it... not much to gain here IMHO. The California trucks had the 3 cat setup (there is a pre-cat just after the manifold on each side) my 3.0 has only one in the typical location... I'm not sure on the 3.5.

why buy the cat, get headers for 4 $300 (rpw) (high flow cat is $250) and straight pipe the main cat. Clay
