I read the other overheating post but mine is totally different. Mine overheats as I'm driving but the temp levels back off as I stop or idle. Another thing is that when I accelerate, the lights all over the car get brighter and my AC or Heater push air out alot faster.
I just had the alternator replaced and ALL the belts replaced. I think it was 5 or 6 of them.
Another thing I noticed is that the water level has been dropping off lately. I've had to add twice in the last 2 months. I don't see a leak but maybe I'm missing it.
Any ideas?
Please help !!!!

Ok guys, I went to Autozone and had the charging system checked. Everything looked fine. I explained how the lights get really bright and the ac/heater shoots out air when I accelerate and the guy said the voltage regulator went bad and so now there are too many volts passing through. When I told him my battery was bubbling and that one of the caps had come off, he said that it was a good thing that it did because the battery could've exploded !!!! He did, however, mention that he's not sure if that's what's causing the overheating problem but that the sensor might be showing that because of the hight volts. So anyway, anyone know how to change a voltage regulator? Please help!!!

Hey guys,
Just found an issue that sounds kinda like mine on another forum. Please read and let me know your thoughts.
Ok, Here's a wierd one. After a valve cover gasket replacement....my alternator is putting out almost 16V and something inside the cabin smells like it is getting hot. (electrical smell). I figure it was just the voltage regulator...so I bought a new alternator....same thinkg, too much voltage...HOW CAN THAT BE?
The only thing that might have something to do with it is....I currently have the headlight/turnsignal switch removed....I am waiting on a new one to come it.....could that have something to do with the high voltage?

I just spoke w/ the autozone that sold me the alternator and they told me that the voltage regulator is is inside the alternator and because they were the ones that sold it to me, that they would give me a replacement for free. I'll replace it and get back to you guys.

Well it was the alternator. The voltage regulator had gone bad on the first one that was sold to me. AutoZone swapped it out for free and the problem was all fixed. I assume the wiring was getting so hot from overcharging that it tripped the heat sensor, therefore, giving an overheating reading. I also noticed that the battery was low on water. Here's my new question: Is it safe to add water to the battery? That's what I was told to do. Please advise.
