hey i just recently did my intake but i didnt think to make it cold air, i just clamed a filter on the end,......does anyone have any other pics of theres so i can sorta have a idea of what itll look like and what i need to do.... also callookzero how is ur intake cold air? because i noticed were the filter is thers like metal in the way.....i now theres a hole there but does that hole give enough cold air to make it a CAI. If you look at my sig, you'll see that I state SRI for short ram intake. and ricachoterols, there is a definite difference in acceleration and throttle response with an intake. If you use a paper cone, maybe not so much, but a properly routed K&N intake will put nearly 2.5 times as much CFM, and more air = more power.

I made the shield out of sheet metal, just basically cut and riveted as I went. The on the filter side I fiberglassed it to reduce heat soak in the shield itself. I did it to primarily make a barrier between the radiator and the filter, and it's bolted down in the stock air box holes. I never tested performance with out without the shield, I know it's a bitchin mud guard. I never get heat soak in my intake tube though, so I imagine it does some good.

Heat soak is what happens when you drive for awhile without such toys as an intercooled intake mani. Stop and go feel your intake mani and intake tube and they'll be extremely hot... even though they have moderately cool air going through them. After I installed the scoop, intake, and heat shield, I would often times have frost build up on the intake tube. It was 20 degrees here, but still. Essentially heat soak is baaaad because you could have the best intake made, and it still kinda defeats the purpose if the air heats up as it enters the intake mani.
One more thing I forgot to mention about the heat shield, is that it also is supposed to keep engine heat away from the MAF; if the MAF reads colder, you get more power.
