What's a good first car to get?

My cousin is looking to get his first car. His choices are the 02' WRX Wagon, Civic 04'-05', Nice quick econoboxes.. What would you guys pick, he is really into JDM and Euro cars. What would you get and why.. with let's say about 6-7g's.

I'd buy my Montero Sport I have for sale. =)

I would recommend something practical- Honda Civic, Mazda3. Reliable, cheap, and can be modified if need be. If it's fuel economy he wants- 1983 VW Rabbit Diesel. They take a lot of abuse and keep going. Easy to work on too.
