Hey all, Long time no post, sorry. The project is comeing along well, but no new posts about that for the moment. I've got another concern. In the midts of laughing at one of my friends who drives a ford exploder, er I mean explorer because his AT just blew up at 65,000 miles. Bummer for him, thought for me. How long are AT in MS's lasting. I've got a 98 3.0 with an AT and im comeing up on 70,000. I've changed the trany oil and only banged it on a couple rocks (ok, well maybe more than a couple...) so I'm wonding how long i've got untill i need to start thinking about a rebuild? This sounds like a question for super Joel, but if anyone wants their two cents on here i'd love the input! As always, thanks in advance!

The transmission on the 97-98 MOntero Sports are made by the company Asian Warner. They are the exact bullet proof transmissions that are in all of the Full Size Montero (pre 2001). They are basically "overbuilt" for this truck and should be one of the last things you should worry about. Please, just be sure you maintain proper fluid levels (overfilled= foaming, slippage, overheating Underfilled= loss of hydraulic pressure, overheating) , service the transmission regularly with Mitsu SPIII fluid, and watch out for those rocks!!! . Hello All, I'm new to the board, but it's great to see such a professional forum for our Montero Sports. I have a 1998 LS 6-cyl. 2 wd and have a question about the auto transmission:
1. Is it recommended that the pan be dropped and all the fluid pumped out for a correct tranny fluid change? (I'm already at 85,000!)
2. The other day I checked the fluid cold and added about a half quart, but realized I filled it JUST over the mark for cold, but NOT even half way to the hot markings. Is this a problem?
Thanks for any help.....Guy

I also have a question, probably for Joel but anyone who knows the answer feel free. How many quarts of fluid does the automatic transmission in a 1999 Montero Sport Limited 4X4 with the 3.5 L engine take? I need to know just in the pan, not the torque converter or any of that. I have heard its between 4 and 5, but I wanted to get another opinion, Thanks

That's pretty much the same answer I'd give you...between 4 and 5. It really all depends on how much fluid you can get out of it. For your truck, I'd recommend raising the drivers side front just a tad, to tilt your truck back towards the right. Your drain plug is located on the right rear corner of the pan. Basically, after you drain it...start with 4 quarts, and check the dipstick adding fluid till you reach the lower of the two lines. Then take your truck out for a spin (perhaps a few miles) and recheck your fluid level. Top it off to the top line (hot) at this point being carefull not to overfill it.
