I have been using 87 octane for the past 4 years in my 98 sport. I tried using 92 octane at first and it just did not seem to run well on 92 so compared mileage and found that it ran worse on the 92 compared to 89 and 87. Frankly I can’t tell any difference between 89 and 87. I have not had any knocking problems while towing even long distances in high heat. It’s your choice but I decided to go to 87 octane.

87 as recommended by Mitsu, since new. 30,000 miles no problems associated with running 87.

don't use anything else but 87 octane! Anything higher is just a waste of money and may even promote drivability issues! If you experience a slight knocking under load, it may be time to have your engine decarbonated (not with STP fuel treatment, but a real intake runner liquid induction treatment). This type of service should be available any local shop...just be sure that they're not just adding a bottle of fuel treatment into your tank and sending you on your way. Engine decarb may even lower your NOx emissions for those of you living in States with emissions testing. If after induction/decarb treatment, you knocking persists while towing or under extreme load, use the higher octane fuel only when neccesary for that particular trip...then go back to 87.
