I don't have my vehicle manual. Could someone tell me what the best brand and weight of motor oil to use for my Montero is?
Thanks!

www.redlineoil.com , I use their 10w40 and I LIVE in the 4000 to 5000 rpm range on my sport and have about 5200 miles on my current change and have no signifigant breakdown of any kind! Also check out improved gas mileage under tech info. on www.4x4ExtremeSports.com. I think it's the best thing going. Although you will definitely pay for it, the reduced need to replace the oil as often should help offset the cost. A proper break in period should also be cosidered before going to full synthetic-at least that it what I've been told and have always practiced.

I use mobil1 15-50w since 600 miles and change it every 3K miles. I live in the north east and use the MS to haul a trailer and 3 bikes around.
Its been 3 years and the truck still runs like new. I just bought a 2003 Full size montero a month ago and the MS sport idles and revs a lot smoother and more quiet than its big brother.

So, do most of the manuals (especially one for a 2001 montero sport LS) say 5W30? I want to use the exact required type.... RG

So, do most of the manuals (especially one for a 2001 montero sport LS) say 5W30? I want to use the exact required type.... RG In regard to the exact required type: I personally believe that the overall performance and protection of vital engine components outweighs the need to do exactly what the manual says. For instance, the manual might say to use a certain type of air or oil filter but that certainly would not stop ME from upgrading to something better. Alas, the 10w40 redline puts out has better cold flowing properties than a petroleum 5w30, has better viscosity protection than a petroleum 20w50 and outperforms most and if not all synthetic 10w40's. Any fully synthetic would be a welcome upgrade to an engine. Redline does make a 5w30 also, which similarly outperforms other petroleums and synthetics alike.

Cool, thanks for the reply. I wil probably go with the petroleum 10W40 for now, and ween my Montero sport over to synthetic gradually. RG

Say Goody,
Just so we understand each other, a petroleum 10/40 will NOT have the same flow properties as a petroleum 5/30, only Redline 10/40 and/or another synthetic 10/40 does/may match/exceed the flow properties of a petroleum 5/30. Something to consider if you are living in a cold area. ;D

Gotcha. I'm pretty versed on petroleum's 10W40, 5W30, and all of that. I've only used synthetic once, however. What kind of break-in period should I need to move my 2001 Sport over to synthetic? RG

Hey Joel, So do you think that not giving my engine enough mileage to break in will cause me problems later on? Because it seems to run better than new and I cannot seem to MAKE it run bad, what I mean is, I really beat the heck out of it on the trail and the pavement. Before I switched, I could tell when it was time to change the oil, now it is still running like the day I did the oil change. I'm wondering if not giving sufficient time has stuck my engine in a "new car type of state." My gas mileage has never been great, but I also haul around a considerable amount of weight in and on top of the vehicle; a safari rack with a full size spare and some fog lights. City mileage is around 17 MPG and if I stay around 60 on the highway I can get about 20. I also have oversize tires and wonder if I must be miscalculating my mileage every tank(stock tires were 235/75/16's-aftermarket tires are 265/75/16's) Am I shorting myself of miles on my MPG? Appreciating your input, 2000utesport

If you went from 235's to 265's your going from a 29.9 inch tire to a 31.6 inch tire which is a 5.7% differance which is in turn (pardon the pun) a 5.7% differance in mileage and speed. For example:
Your speedo sais your going 100 mph, your actually going 105.7 mph
Your speedo sais your going 50, your actually going 52.35 mph.
Your odo sais you went 50 miles, you actually went 52.35 miles...
ect ect... Hope that helps with the milage.... Chris in New Mex

Chris, Ya that does help. So I HAVE been shorting myself of miles....I'm actually doing better than I thought. I will have to calculate my next couple of tanks and see how I do. Do you think I could just apply the percentages to my previous MPG calculations? and be right on? Anyways, I will see for sure and jot it down on my next fillups. thanks for the info.
