so i hit up o'reilly to try and make an intake only to run into a road block. i could not get the MAF off the top of the air box so i ended up taking the box filter out and the old intake tube off and replaced the intake tube with a spectre filter. i guess what im asking is if there is a better way to do this. i got some sound out of it but more would be cool

Exactly the one I got.
No that doesn't sound normal. I just unbolted the whole MAF assembly (like you stated) and with a little jiggling it came right off the air-box. I did, however, get the wrong MAF adapter and had to fab up my own plate. Check out that post I listed, those guys got it right with the adapter.
CAREFUL with your MAF! As you probably know they are very sensitive pieces of your intake! The slightest breakage or dirt on that little sensor inside there and you'll be up for a new MAF.

Note: as always, pictures of your struggle help too if you can. Photobucket is my choice.

ok ill get some pics up, but with mine i got one bolt off cause sense they are flat on the back they just spin in the plastic but i took the vise grips to it and got one off only to figure out it was stuck i tried pushing it as to not damage the sensor, but it was just stuck, should i unbolt all of them
edit: just thought about it and do the bolts stay connected to the top of box

hmmm..the bolts didn't stay connected to anything on my intake...Also the bolts stayed still while I undid the nuts, no real spinning seemed to be an issue. Maybe someone unsuccessfully messed with your intake before you?!

feathers, something is not right. you should not be taking anything off the "top" of the MAF. once you have unbolted the black box and removed it, that is all you have to unhook. the adapter plate bolts right to where the black box was. does that help? again, pics help a lot.

feathers, something is not right. you should not be taking anything off the "top" of the MAF. Thats what I was thinking through all this! But I just imagined he meant the back/side to be the "top" of the air filter box, since it is angled slighty upward. Hopefully feathers isn't trying to disassemable the MAF enclosure! AH! I'd feel so bad!

haha no im not that stupid im talking about the bolts on that hold the maf to the air box they are flat oval bolts and they spin in the little plastic seats they sit in stretching it out like they are just free in there, but when i bust out the vise grips and get the nut off the stud stays in the maf/ airbox top half. ill get pics up tomorrow for sure

i know what his talking about i thank. the 4 brass like looking "mine where" bolts that look like studs with a square end that seats into the plastic. Sounds like someone tightin the hell out of the bolts reasseybleing it in pass and caused the square head to turn and strip out its holding seat or maybe the nut was super tight and weathered locked it self like a rusted bolt and the plastic just couldnt handle the torq trying to unlossein it. hope that makes since.. you should not need these 4studs if you already bought 4bolts and nuts to secure the maf to the spectra adaptor. I did mot have any extra bolts so i did use the 4 orignal bolts and they did not come off easy and had to bang them out. please use caution i dont remember what the square head of the stud was secured to and you dont want to bang on the mafs.
is anyone following me do i have this right ?

ok i cant remember what the studs where connected the mafs or this air lid take a look at the pic i thank this is what his talking about the 4 bolts that run thru the lid to secure the mafs to . if you dont have the hardware then you have to use the factory bolts and to get them i beleave they wher studed to the airlid and i had to beat them out

I had the same problem and I destroyed my box getting them loose, vice grips would not even help. You will never usethe box again so just be careful not to damage the MAF. You can also fab up a air scoop using the S shaped tube that goes from the air box to the fender. A little tidbit of info, I did this and many of my mods while I was still leasing my truck. CLay

if the sensor comes away from the lid than beat the crap out of them to get them out but if you are stuck and cant get the mafs off away from the lid than use caution i wouldnt beat and if the nuts are striped or the head and you cant get it out with vice grips just remember its plastic wher the stud head ends are and you could cut/drill or heat up a flat head and melt the plastic away. do this to each of the ones that wont come out and you should be good to go with vice grips since you could get a better griped with it pulled away from the lid. dont discard it. if you ever wanted to repair it , its totaly doable by melting some plastic over the holes and redrilling a new one useing kinda like useing a plastic welder or if you got some fiberglass laying around with nothing to do like me just break it out and repair the lid
