Hello All
I just joined this forum, and hope to get some guidance on working with my Montero sport.
In the past I neglected to change oil and this seems to have caused some damage to the engine. It started consuming too much motor oil. I did some research, and it seems that probably the valve stem seals need to be replaced.
A 3 angle valve job would cost me close to $700 with out the valves, and I was wondering if I can replace the cylinder head with an after market rebuild cylinder head from RPMRONS.com, which would come with the new valves, in case my valves are also damaged.
Is replacing a cylinder head a job that can be undertaken in my garage without speciality tools?
In the past I have changed spark plugs and O2 sensors on sport.
Any guidance and encouragement would be very welcome!
Thanks Hari

A cylinder head is doable in one's garage, but if your problem is just oil consumption then I would just replace the valve stem seals and be done with it. I have never seen problems with cylinder head on the sport, unless a timing belt broke. you can do the valve stem seals with the head on. You will need a cylinder leak down tester or hose to compress air into the cylinder. this will hold the valve up, then you will need a valve spring compressor. I suggest a universal type seen here www.matcotools.com/ProductImages/MST9140A.jpgfrom there it just remove one at a time. not to bad. just takes a while.
