Well got the word from the mechanic that my 02 Sport's transmission is shot at 85K. Fortunately I bought an extended service contract and it looks like they might cover some of the cost - but you know how these guys are to deal with... supposed to cover up to 2K.
The tans tech guy called and said I was looking at around 3K for a low mileage used unit or 4+K for a rebuild.
Curious if this is the going rate for a trans repair and any other options.

If it is driveable I'll bet it just needs a good service. If it FAILED and is dead, and dealer did NOT do service that was paid for, your covered!! You'll have to prove it, thogh. I went thru this about 30 years ago...tranny failed completely and destroyed itself due to a defect in design. One of few really reputable dealers I knew got it done for me AND they gave me a lifetime warranty provided I was owner AND service done at proper intervals and maintained! Rare, but I went thru enough hassle and threatened using Magnuson Moss Act to get what was due.
I will bet a GOOD flush and service will fix it.
remember....ONLY ! ONLY ! SPIII fluid in that transmission !!!, Get it from Mitsu dealer (or KIA SPIII is same, Huyandai same but seems to have highest price per qt.) If it is under warranty don't take the chance with aftermarket so called equivalents. A new tranny from Korum up in Washington is approx $ 3000-$3400 if I remember plus shipping. You can also find trannys on ebay ( take your chance ) AND last night I found a reputable rebuilder online selling them for $1740 , core charge of $500, paid shipping!!!! Do a web search.

I had it flushed at the dealer because I noticed issues with it not going into drive after shifting from reverse. It also did the same while setting at a stop sign.
The local dealer flushed with Diamond III and drove it for about a week or so doing parts runs and could not diagnose the problem.
Took it to a local trans tech. They backed it up and could not get it into drive. Finally got it into the garage and dropped the pan and found crap in the pan.
Dealer did not drop the pan and they used the trans cooler connection to flush it. Doubt I have any recourse with the dealer and their flush job.

Was fluid ever changed in the past??? Dealer probably did a regular replacement using cooler hose. What did trans. shop find in pan? If just junk than I'd say get it flushed with a PG flush machine..this backflushes it and you get more junk out.
Years ago I lived near and was good friends with a well known transmission shop. The owner Joe did regular and racing transmissions. He built many many units for Englishtown and other racing uses and is well known in the industry for the quality of his work and his knowledge. I learned a lot hanging around his shop. I've seen many hopeless cases fixed just by doing a good cleaning and maybe adjustments.
I would follow exactly any advice buggzyy gives if he happens to reply.

If it's not going into drive, I'll bet either clutches or valve body are plugged up. I spent a lot of spare time in tranny shop since we also hunted together. Over a period of like 12 years it was same thing over and over and over again. People failing to change out fluid and trans. goes on the blink. Yes its upsetting. I would try one more time with a reverse flush and cleaning (not the same as your dealer did) and have filter changed. Then see how it is, I will see if I can find the link to aut trans rebuiders.......If same company as I have heard of in past they are reputable.

See if buggzyy has any advice but a reverse flush cleaning may save you several thousand $$.
rebuilt-auto-transmissions.com $1740 rebuilt unit one year guarantee $500 core charge(unit your replacing) just my 2 cents.

I suspect the valve body has a stuck valve cause may be from a broke component or worn clutchs. either way you would be better off pulling the unit out and overhauling it assuming the electronics are working properlly. Any code or flashing N light? Most Trans services now days is just the fluid flush with out filter replacement. most tranny's don't have a serviceable filter any more so as long as the fluid is clean and changed when needed filters will last the life of the unit. I have yet so see a MS trans fail come to our shop most just need a good service with lots of fresh fluid. keep us up on what turns out.

Trans tech says the pump and converter are shot and the extended service folks will cover to a max of $2K.

GOOD!!! That shouldn't cost that much We hope......if they can sell a rebuilt for 1700.00 then you should be able to get it with everything covered. Too bad you weren't in NJ....I say w/o hestitating go to Midway"s......That guy is probably in the top 10 if not the best trans. guy. He has built many a unit even for Garlits and others and is well reccomended. Make sure they give you a wriitten signed estimate stating the MAX cost.....They can..don't take a no on that...they do trannys every day so pricing a rebuild should be a piece of cake...Good Luck Man!!!!!
Hey an idea...look up Midway Transmissions in Bridgewater NJ...Tell him some guy said to ask.....W/o anything else, average price for your repair...takedown, clean, replace those two, reinstall Use that as an idea....If your out west or South it should be less than his quote
