hey all, im trying to get the most out of my MS its a 1998 es 4cyl with 190k on it, i noticed awhile back the valve cover gasket had gone and i replaced it. when changing the cam belt i noticed alot of oil build up on timing belt cover, possible main seal or cam seal...idk. but i was told with higher mileage trucks to try a synthetic blend to keep it running awhile longer. maybe eventually go to full synthetic however....i was told with such high mileage could result in weak points in seals starting to leak....input please

You could try the blend first and see if you develop leaks. If you do, then replace the seals/ gaskets. I am not sold on spending the extra money on full synthetics but it may make sense if you live in a cold climate where temp inside the engine fluctuates.

synthetics get a bad rap for leaks. i think most of that was just trash talk. there is some validity to that though as there is no 'wax" in a synthetic that could be a leak aid in dyno oil. Try one of the "high mileage" oils, castrol or something. those have additives that are supposed to help swell gaskets to prevent leaks. going to syn, like cwic says, isn't the answer really. clean oil is the key to long engine life.
