Im no stranger to mitsubishis however Im new to the montero. Im the soon-to-be owner of a 1998 montero sport. Im big into modification including audio. Having only seen the interior once... at night... I didnt think to look for any details such as what size speakers it takes and where, or whether or not it will fit a double din head unit or not. I saw it had a simple sony cd player but that was the only aftermarket part of the truck.
This being said, is there anything I should know about the audio system setup? What size speakers, how difficult it is to access and replace them?

yeah i believe must have 6.5's in rear and front doors, other MS with inifnity sound have those plus a tweeter in front doors and a 3" also near the knee of the dash.
I own a car audio shop.. if you need anything let me know.

The infinity sound system (if so equipped) is the best sound system you can have on these rigs, I have it and man it really puts out, with more plenty of room to go. When installing an aftermarket cd player in theses systems you need to get a head unit with 4 preouts for the amplifier system.
Most places like Best Buy when installing an aftermarket head unit for you or when someone else installs one themselves just bypass the awesome amplifier sound system and basically cut it out, don't let them! Just make sure you get a head unit with 2 front preouts and 2 rear preouts!

Just an update I do have the ms and it didnt have the infinity system, it had a jvc head unit that has yet to power up. When I pulled the head unit I found a cable that appeared to be either amp or cd changer cable. Disappeared under the floor mat. If it were an amp or cd changer where would I look for the other end? I know the infinity system came with the indash 6disc right? I just have the cubby there.

infinity sound system came with either 6 disc or single cd, mine is only the single cd unit. The cd changers all were in that lower cubby hole only. As far as a cord going underneath the carpet? Is it cable that is thicker and round with a bunch of little pins in side it? (or the opposite end of this, with a bunch of little holes for little pins)

Okay so I admit with everything else going on, the audio has been on the back burner. I replaced the nonfunctioning jvc with another jvc my friend had installed in his eclipse. Plugged in no problem as expected. However, when I tested the radio I found no response in the front speakers and the rear speakers sound horrible. Theyll all need replacing. Im just wondering which brand to go to? Ive seen a lot of good products between rockford, audiobahn, infinity and kicker. Not looking for anything top-of-the-line, but I dont want my sound quality to rely on walmart either.
