Figured this was the appropriate place to ask. Has anyone gone through the trouble of re-flashing the ECU on their Montero Sport?
Been pouring through EvoScan and Openport for the last week and surfing forums but so far not much has come up.

I am not sure anyone has, I did some research a while back and didn't find anything. Ended up going with a AEM FIC8 piggyback ECU.

I am not sure anyone has, I did some research a while back and didn't find anything. Ended up going with a AEM FIC8 piggyback ECU. According to EvoScan, at least a 98 and a 2003 have been done. Haven't emailed them yet. Just got my Openport 2.0 yesterday. I'm going to start working with it here in a bit. I didn't know AEM did a piggy-back. I was just looking at their stuff. Interesting. Did they have a pre-built harness for the Sport? Any problems, issues? My second choice, after reflashing, was MegaSquirt but that's looks like it'd be a bit more complicated. Edward

Sorry so late, please update if there is an update! I reflashed before getting the AEM, care to guess what the reflash was worth? I would always give the advice to not reflash. The simplest thing to do would be to install a Apexi fuel tuner if you plan on keeping it simple. There is no prebuilt AEM harness for the sport but the unit will work in your truck. I think this ? should be in the performance section where this topic has been discussed and there should be some more info for you.

Neither is re-chiping and then flashing. So, I guess that answers that question. I need to tweak the fuel and timing so only fuel isn't useful. Boomslang will make a harness to specifications. I had two made. A standard extension harness for the '97 3.0L 5-speed ECM and one to convert from the '97 3.0L 5-speed ECM to a '99 3.5L automatic PCM. They showed up late last week but I've been in Moab for the last week so I haven't done anything with them. I looked deeper into AEM, but couldn't figure out if it'd work on a NA vehicle to decrease timing and fuel. Edward

The AEM will let you adjust both through the maps, my truck is NA as well. It can also change the targeted A/F ratio and controll your nitrous as I do with mine but the A/F control is complicated. Twood will have more technical info on the AEM than I do as he set his up on his own. There is some talk on the 3SI board about flashing the 99 ECU but they are at the collecting files stage. I think they have managed to change definitions that limit the vehicle speed.

The AEM is quite capable at retarding timing and adding/removing fuel. Keep in mind it can't advance timing though.
It's a bit on the pricey side of things, but works well on the montero.
