I was just wondering if anyone here is a HAM and has a radio mounted in their Monty Sport. Just picked up an '02 and looking for ideas. Thanks

I'm working on my license, but not quite there yet. I too was wondering about mounting options and such. Definitely a cramped area to try and find anywhere to put it.
I've speculated about using the cd player slot in front of my shifter, then I would need to replace my stock radio with an aftermarket one though, and the stock one is just too nice!

I've considered a Yaesu dual bander with the detachable faceplate, as well as a small 2 meter and put it in the spot in front of the shifter. Just not sure if there's enough airspce to keep it cool.
Good luck on the license. I was a little nervous going in but it was fairly easy for the tech exam. The on-line study guides and practice tests are a big help.

Thanks, I started studying when I was a lot younger because my dad is a ham too. Went to hamvention in Ohio with him and his buddy a few times fun stuff. I fell out of it for a while though because of school and now that im finishing college I've started again.
He actually has the unit you are talking about, the dual band yaeseu with the detachable face plate. He put the main unit underneath the driver seat, worked really well. The only problem was the signals from the unit killed his car ecu twice, Mazda 3, because it wasn't properly shielded. So we both haven't done much in the way of ham for a long time. He was part of the team in brown county for the '2000' bubble, when they thought everything would crash.
Which is a reason I want my license bad, they are essentially the only forms of communication that little if any infrastructure (besides repeaters and such)
Our friend had his electrical (I don't think that's right, the higher band license) and was making contacts around the world.
Pretty neat stuff.

Perfectly feasible. I own an 02, but haven't outfitted it yet. I use the suburban for road trips, so no need for a radio in the Montero, yet. I highly recommend checking out www.k0bg.com . You won't find a better source of mobile ham knowledge.

Whats the price tag on the license and radio? If I remember correctly, I paid $25 for the exam but it can vary depending on the ARRL-sanctioned club administering the test. One cool thing is that if you pass whichever test you take, you can take the next level for free. For example, I went and took the test for technichian, and upon passing I had the option to take the General exam for free. Nearly got it without studying, too. As far as radios, that's dependent on what you want to do. A basic Chinese HT (Handy-Talky, handheld) will set you back $40 or so for 2 meter, 70 cm etc (bands open to Tech). If you're licensed for it, you can run an HF (high frequency/digital) rig in-vehicle for around a grand. Ideally, I'd like to run a dual-bander (2m/70 cm) as they are basic frequencies and fairly popular in my area as well as with off-road clubs. As the budget isn't really there yet I may go with a dual-band HT and run a mag-mount antenna when needed. Check out eham.net as well as the ARRL site for info, and hamtestonline for practice tests.

I've also considered a CB as I have a Uniden PC78LTW laying around, but it's too big to mount "neatly" in the Sport. In my previous truck (2001 Dodge Ram 2500) I ran a "peaked and tweaked" Cobra 29 LTD with a "footwarmer" and got pretty good distance out of it. Once the amp went I ran barefooot with all of my other setups.

They are. IMO, they are better performing than Cobras, stock-for-stock, and have better features for the money. Weather channels and backlit knobs included. Even the compacts (Pro510 and 520xl) work well out of the box. I think much of it has to do with the fact that the Cobra 29's are popular among modders and competitors and will be worked seven ways to Sunday whereas Unidens are geared toward people who want a better performing (and looking) radio for "regular" use.I've run three of each with properly tuned antennas and never a promblem with the Unidens while two of the Cobra (1 modded, 1 stock) had issues. Dunno.

Ya your right. His puts out 7 amps and its a smaller unit! Mine only does 4. I like the compact design as well.

For what it's worth, and despite my obvious bias toward Uniden, I recently installed a Cobra 18 WX ST II in the Monty. I plan on doing some day trips with the boy this year and felt the cb would be handy out on the highway. Still trying to budget for a 2/70 Yaesu.

Where did you get your antenna mount? That looks pretty nice.
I have a Kenwood D700 I have been meaning to install... I'll take some pics once its up and running. -WD4AWB
