2000 MS, on an intermitting basis, I keep getting the "service engine soon" light for the last 6 months. It only happens on the highway, while accelerating on an incline. I get a little hesitation, shaking, & in seconds it clears up & drives normally. Only the light comes on & stays on for maybe a day or so. Again, most of the time it's fine, till it misfires on occasion. The code is a cylinder 3 misfire. I had the plugs & wires replaced, light came back, & most recently replaced the ignition coil that's for cylinder 3,& 6. Same thing. Any thoughts on what else I should look at or replace? I'm stumped.

I think I was getting that code when my EGR solenoid (not the valve) went bad.
Update: must have been a different code.

Hmm. I would check the egr system as well. Other possibilities are the wrong plugs were used (needs iridium tipped iirc), low compression, ignition coils, or a faulty or clogged injector. If the injector is faulty it will more than likely throw a code. Not always the case if it's just clogged.
Service manual specs; Iridium tip plugs - 1.0-1.1mm gap, limit of 1.3mm (states to not try and adjust for fear of damaging either the iridium tip or the platinum portion.)
Plug cable resistance; 22 kiloohms max.
Injector resistance; 13-16 ohms at 68 degrees F
Primary coil resistance; .74-.90 ohms.
Secondary coil resistance; 20.1-27.3 kiloohms. (The one you replaced. These sit on top of the primary coil iirc)

... The code is a cylinder 3 misfire. I had the plugs & wires replaced, light came back, & most recently replaced the ignition coil that's for cylinder 3,& 6. Same thing. Any thoughts on what else I should look at or replace? I'm stumped. - Faulty spark plug 3 - Clogged or faulty fuel injector 3 - Faulty ignition coil 3 - Fuel injector 3 harness is open or shorted - Fuel injector 3 circuit poor electrical connection - Ignition coil 3 harness is open or shorted - Ignition coil 3 circuit poor electrical connection - Insufficient cylinder 3 compression - Incorrect fuel pressure - Intake air leak These are supposed to be in order. Check the top first, bottom last. Since you already have #1 and #3. I'd run a can of BG 44K through the fuel system. Maybe two. See what happens. The second to the last I think is unlikely as it causes other issues - but, mostly caused by a dirty fuel filter. If that hasn't been replaced in several years, I'd replace it just 'cause. The very last one can cause this and if you had a leak before and they didn't reseal the manifolds right you'll still have the same problem. Its relatively easy to check so I'd knock this one out just to take it out of the list. Edward

Sorry to hear that dclambertt. Now we both have this issue. Thanks for the help guys. To Edward. Before I do anything else, I think I'll try a can of BG 44k first. Now, is it best to pour a can in the gas tank right before filling up? Read some great reviews on that product. Hope it works.

Thanks Joe, misery loves company . Think I'll try the same approach (cleaner) before I go back in. Dan

I don't see BG 44k fuel system cleaner in any of the auto stores. I only see it online on eBay's & amazon. Has anyone tried or can recommend another brand of fuel cleaner that's sold in the major stores? I would order BG44k on eBay, but don't really want to wait for its arrival. Thanks

Would Seafoam be a suitable substitute?

I ordered 3 cans of BG 44K on ebay coming from San Fran. Decided to start replacing plugs, wires, plug tube seals, valve cover gaskets over the weekend. Glad I did.. first plug connector (2) that I pulled out was covered in oil. Tube seals completely flattened compared to new seals. No wonder those suckers leak. Plugs so far are really worn out, so well overdue.
What's the best sealer to use on the valve covers? I'm using Permatex Copper Spray-a-Gasket Hi-Temp sealant right now.

BG products are available at Napa. Sometimes other places like the dealerships.
No, AFAIKT, there isn't an equivalent to the 44K for fuel injection. Haven't found anything that works as well, anyway.

Just ordered on eBay, as my local Napa store doesn't sell BG 44k. I'll let you guys know if this takes care of my intermittent small problem. Especially you Dan, since you have the same code. Thanks Edward. I'll give this product a try before I do anything else.

I received 3 cans of BG44K over the weekend but haven't used them yet. I finished replacing my plugs, wires, plug tube and valve cover seals and that cured the misfire altogether. Plugs really looked worn, and most were submerged in oil because of the leaky old tube seals. Oddly the plug in cylinder 3, which was producing the CEL, was clean and dry. Plug wire looked okay as well.
As I was warned in other posts, the coolant tubes running to the throttle body, specifically the rear one, was stiff as a board and leaked immediately when I started the engine, but I was looking for that already. I actually had a spare clothes washer hose that was the perfect size, so I cut out a 5" section and installed it. No more leak, but need to watch it to make sure it will take the temps, although exit tube is far lighter in weight for some reason and it's been in there for a long long time.
Anyway, the engine runs beautifully now. Quite a project but learned a lot. One odd thing that did happen was the truck literally jumped when I put it in reverse. It did that a couple more times until I drove about a block in forward gear, then it completely went away. That was a little freaky.

Can't believe the difference in the engine. Dan

Hey Dan. Well it's been 11 days now & so far, so good. I poured a can of it, followed by super unleaded fuel. The light hasn't come back & running great on the highway. I want to give it a little more to be sure, but I'll keep you posted.
