What scanner is it and how cheap? It would be nice to have one for all our obdII cars... right now i can only pull codes on the mustang with its performance scanner and it won't read the other cars. this is what I have and saved me many times on dealing with grumpy auto store employees.....LOL link

Well i swapped it out. 50 miles or so no light. Then bam it came on... got to go to advanced and get code read.... I would check both that you took out to see if they are within spec. Also, check and double check the vacuum lines. Run a smoke test if you can. Red.....if I were you, I'd buy this cheap scanner from Amazon, saved me hundreds of trips to the stores, lol. Replaced the EGR valve and modulator valves from the ones I got from the yard recently and SES light again at 40 miles......totally baffled on my next steps in troubleshooting the dreaded P0401 code.....was thinking on using seafoam spray and replacing all hoses. You should try running a smoke test to Seafoam is good stuff. It'll clean it out and the same time loosen up a bunch of stuff. I did the one you spray into the intake. Shortly after that I started having my egr issues. Whether it was related or coincidence I don't know. If I were to do it again I would probably unplug the egr solenoid and remove the egr pipe on the exhaust and possibly plug the hole. Thanks for the heads up!....I'll unplug the hoses going to the solenoid.....was actually thinking on just using the seafoam to clean the eger valve and the part where it's connected to those two holes to the intake, and the throttle body....nothing more.

Smoke test... please elaborate... Pull the vacuum line off the brake booster and pump smoke through it. Any leaks will expel the smoke. Take like a large Gatorade bottle or something with a good size opening (helps if it's thin so you can squeeze it) and use it to catch and pump smoke from repeatedly lighting and extinguished some newspaper or something, dry ice (bit more dangerous and difficult to catch, or as BD has mentioned if you smoke use that. Or if you have $1000 they sell smoke machines

Not a bad idea. It cleans the intake and all that. My concern was the amount of soot that was expelled and thus getting recycled back into the system.

So my egr code still lingers.... grrr... Egr was replaced at 225,000 miles. Whats the life span??? On that note I bought new vacuum tubing. Will replace all on the egr system and battery disconnect again....
Does a battery disconnect for sure clear codes?

Battery disconnect if left off long enough should clear code till that particular test is run again by the vehicle.

Did some work on the exhaust today. I opted for the spark plug non fouler trick to eliminate the 0431 temporarily. Circling back.... Lol... well I eliminated the 0431 with the non fouler trick, but i gave myself a 0134 instead. It says bank 1 front O2 sensor no activity??? Is bank 1 the drivers or passenger side??? Funny I unplugged the passenger side front o2 to reroute the wiring. Did I cause it? Or is it the drivers side front? Would it kill them to say passenger or driver... lol

Ok.... well that means my spark plug non fouler is a success!!! Cause P0431 is bank 2...
Ok duh... I guess that should have even my clue. Different banks. Head is spinning with all the codes! Ugh!
P0134: Heated Oxygen Sensor Circuit No Activity Detected (bank 1, sensor 1) sensor 1 is pre- cat P0431: Warm Up Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2)
But now why did my opposite front o2 act up? Ugh... Maybe it did not like me unplugging it to move the wiring...grrr...
Will the insanity never end!!!

So i got really annoyed and went out in the mist and fiddled on the sport just now. Replaced all these lines related to the egr system. Found these marks on one of my lines to the egr solenoid... maybe just maybe... fingers crossed... these were causing the issue? Guess i will see if my code goes off. Unplugged and checked the wiring on the passenger o2 that I fussed with the other day. I made sure nothing was too tight and all was plugged in tight. Guess i will see what happens there. Maybe i did not have it plugged in tight!

Soon I will go back with a paint pen an make sure all are marked correctly as stock. Just need to verify they are run right. You never know the shop might have fubared that too. But at least I know there are no compromised lines. I used 5/32 tubing, just for reference. The red check valve... do they go bad? I know GM ones have and have cause issues for me in the past. Anyway to check this thing? I know the inlets had carbon smears inside. I did not want to spray it with cleaner cause I was not sure what is inside. How reliable are the part store versions? Might be worth it to replace. Lord knows if it has ever been touched.

so if I wanted to clean the EGR port.... which one is it and can it be cleaned on the truck? Shop supposedly cleaned it a year ago, but.... seeing as how I've never had the intake off myself... I can't picture it in my head I bet its not this port... it looks too easy? center of pic to the left... I'm betting its this one... bottom left... might have to get creative with a hanger...

My Monty has been idling & accelerating better as ever.....just the dreaded P0401 is bugging me.

I got the hose at Advance auto. They have it on a spool in the back. 5/32 is the size.
I'm betting the red valve is NOT reversible. My guess is that it has a check valve inside to only let the flow go one way....hoping someone will chime in to verify...
I will double check my routing based on the diagrams i have found and let you know what goes what way..
