If I do buy this and be a guinea pig the ONLY WAY they get money is through PayPal. If not then they can eat some fried cat. I would put the lift on my self and have the driveshaft looked at by a guy here in town who does shafts for race cars and jeeps.
Sounds like a good plan. Good drive shaft guys are worth their weight in gold.
is I talked to a guy here in town a few nights ago and tell him how irritated I was with IFS he said if I supplied the axles and parts he would do it for 4000. I've seen his welds and they look really good. So I am curious...still approaching both with caution. The guy messaged me back and said the picture wouldn't match what all I got. He said they used a drop spindle kind of like what fords use to get bigger wheels on a smaller lift I guess?
Yes. Well, sort of. Yes, they do a drop spindle, but that's to get more clearance under the cross member. It doesn't really have anything to do with the tire size. I mentioned this above. I was talking about the half-shaft angles not being OEM. They only drop the front diff what looks like 4-5", then they use drop spindles to get the extra 3-4" for a total of 7". That is I suspect how they get away with using the stock front drive shaft with a 'spacer'.
$4000/$50 hr = 80 hours. If he can't do a lift in 80 hours ... well, he would have to have some serious issues. Yes, that amount sounds reasonable.
ED do you have measurements and stuff for the front d 44 axle and the rest of the first build with coil springs? A guy here is asking in town. He seems to be pretty interested in building one. He straightens frames and can lays heavenly beads. I'm a member of a club and found him here. He's done several but not on Montero sports.
I don't have them already written down, but I can get them for you. Sounds like you may have found someone. That's good. Experience with SASs is always good! His welding skills need to be top notch because of what he's working on. Radius arm comes loose on the highway and you'll wish you were dead.
If you're really serious about doing the SAS, you need to write everything down that you want to do for this guy. It'll make his life a lot easier, and yours too.
I suggest starting a build thread in the off-road section. That'll make it easier to document everything and there are some things you might want him to change or do differently than I did. Easier to discuss in a dedicated thread.
I am not totally against the lift especially seeing DC sport did one. Although I bet it was still a PITA for him to do it. Lol
The Iron Man lift was pretty nice. Iron Man's stuff in general is pretty nice and well thought out. I talked to DC back when. He didn't have any problems with the lift that I remember, but that was a 5" lift. Like I said above, 7" is getting into a whole different ball game.
I'm not opposed to IFS lifts. I'm just very, very leery of the companies that turn these out. Some big name 4X companies here in the US that have been around for decades turn out IFS lifts - well, lifts in general - for vehicles like Jeep, Chevy, Ford and Chrysler that aren't worth the metal they're made of. I spend too much time at the shops listening to horror stories from the techs that get customers in that had a lift done and now they have vibration problems or stuff is breaking all the time. The infamous Jeep 'Death Wobble' caused by poor lift geometry is a real common one. Sucks when you can't even get a company here in the US to admit they have a design flaw, and then they refuse to honor their warranty(s).
