Didn't work that way. The LS came either way. I have two Wide LS M/Ts and my friend has a Narrow LS M/T. I don't think the ES ever had a 'wide' version. The XLS and Limited are all 'wide' in the Gen 1s. I think that's true of the Gen 2s, also. I don't remember what the option was. It was not the off road option, I believe it was a trim option. You could get either solid or two tone in the 'wide' version. I've never seen a two tone in 'narrow' however. Same with leather. Either cloth or leather on the wide, but I've only seen cloth on the narrow versions. The 'wide' flares and the 7x15 (gen 1) or 8x16 rims went together along with appropriate speedometer gears and larger tires. The rear hatch fascia changed, too, I think. Edward FROM POST ABOVE 1-"Either cloth or leather on the wide, but I've only seen cloth on the narrow versions." 2- The XLS and Limited are all 'wide' in the Gen 1s. My first leather and it is great as it doesnt easily stain and wears better. 2-I got my MS new off the lot with.xlt,lthr,sunroof,4xpkg infinity,& widebody. 3-is there an option LS code sheet in the MS somewhere that will let me know if its LS or not?

[/quote] Not fond of the cloth either. Other than the body markings, I have no idea how to tell. The Limited, LS and XLS have 'Limited', 'LS' and 'XLS' have body stickers. I'm sure that buried somewhere in Mitsubishi there's a way to tell from the VIN but no one I've ever talked to at Mitsu could ever tell me. The model 'order' from base to highest is ... 1) ES 2) LS 3) XLS 4) Limited The ES only came in 2WD and used the 2.4L. ES specific engine and transmission(s) not found in any other model. There was no 'wide' version of the ES. No leather, 15x6" steel rims, no rear carrier, pretty much just a bare striped model. To the best of my knowledge the LS in Gen 1 or Gen 2 never came with the heated side mirrors. That was something that was only available on the XLS and Limited in Gen 1 and I believe that followed through Gen 2. The 3.5L only came in the Limited in Gen 1 and I believe that was also true of the Gen 2. The Gen 1 XLS and Limited were only available in A/T. Mitsu dropped the M/T for the Gen 2. This is what I usually look for if I have to figure out what 'model' the Sport is and there are no external markings. The issue is, excluding the ES, virtually every option is available on every model and a lot of the things that WEREN'T factory model options, were dealer install options. Edward

Edward 5th (S or T) and 6th (2, 3, or 4) letter/number in the vin. S=2wd, T=4wd, 2 LS/ES, 3 XS/XLS, 4 Limited. This is for 2nd gen. I haven't found the vin coding for vehicles before 2000 but would think they are similar.

Ask a service advisor to run the last. 8 of vin. It will show ALL equipt it was shipped with. 6000# towibg pkg.not 5k came with lsd and 4.90. Ask him to print it out for ya. I'm gonna have to do that... would be nice to know what it should have. are they pretty nice about doing it? Our Mitsu place is tied in with Cadillac and they are all a bunch of jerks. Reading thread really brings up some interesting "options" these Sports came in. I wanted to get some information on my MS when I bought it and went to the local Mitsu dealer I buy my parts from to run the VIN. Its a 2000 XLS for sure and it has the "towing package" and I asked if it has a LSD and they said if it has the towing package it should have LSD. Well decided to check the good old way and lift the rear and rotate the tires to see if they spun the same direction...they didn't so I don't have LSD. If I remember right my rears spin opposite directions... You're correct about the spare wheel. My optima SXL does not have a spare. Sent from my SM-N900V using proboards Haha BD... we just got a 2013 SXL (black) I opened the trunk to check it out and was like fix a flat... really? What did you do about a Spare? I'm only seeing ones for the 16 and 17 inch models on ebay.. nothing for our 18 inch. Guess due to the bigger brakes? Coincidentally the week the optima came home the Sport died with a P0300... I guess it was made it was not the driver anymore... or it sighed and said finally I can stop fighting it and give up & I can rest...

Can't find thread where models were mentioned. ... Thinking these were mentioned Limited slip wasn't model dependent. In fact, I don't think there's a model of anything where limited slip was actually included even going back into the muscle cars. Like the locking differential, that was just a stand-alone option. My big Sport - 3.0L LS - came with limited slip, but my little Sport - 3.0L LS - didn't. They're identical vehicles. Only like 1700 vehicles apart in production. Edward While calling the local mitsu Dlr about my "key" issue post,I asked parts how i can tell if my MS 2001 has posi. He said they all did. i repeated it and he was still insistent. I asked if he needed a build sheet or vin and he said no...they all had them. he never hesitated. Ive never known that to be the case with any mfr ever!they were always option or spo (spec order)ect.Just beware, even parts people can be in error. Ultimately its easier to learn by jacking up one rear tire and see if you just sit and spin or crawl down off the jack.

The spare wheel deal was interesting. Some these days don't even come with a spare to "save fuel." You have to purchase them separate. Think the Kia Sorento is one of them. Think they just include a can of fix a flat. Yea, the spare thing is goofy. I just can't belive they'd sell you a spare tire that takes different lug nuts than the rims installed on the vehicle. Found that out the hard way when I got a flat on my '03 and couldn't put the spare on. The OEM heads - either the Infinity or the regular head - have excellent reception. The techs thought I was nuts when I replaced the original OEM head in my big Sport with a new OEM head. I kept telling them they had fantastic reception and that's why I wanted to keep the OEM head but they wouldn't believe me until they got it in. Made believers out of the techs that's for sure. The long wire from the console to the back was cheap. You can probably get that aftermarket. The Y isn't available from Mitsu, though, and I don't have any idea how that plugs together. Some vehicles are already pre-wired with the rear CD harness and the rear side glass antenna wire. My big Sport had the CD changer harness but not the antenna. I'm hoping the '99 has the antenna harness. Given that that thing is only like 2-3 options from having everything you could possibly put on a Sport I think it probably will. But, since I just said that .... I know the Mitsu film tint was for sure a dealer option and I think the tinted glass was also a dealer option. The tinted glass - and there were two tints - was definitely a factory option. My '97 dealership 'brochure' showed the film tint as a vehicle option, but of course they don't say where it might be applied at. I THINK the dealership installed the film tint on mine as I don't remember it being there when it was in the lot back in '98. But, that was a LONG time ago, so .... Edward Edward, My recently aquired MS has the antenna in the Lt quarter glass. where would I look for the Y? At the junction between the glass antenna, the mast antenna and the radio? Is it accessible under the dash or behind the radio? I want to see if its hooked up,cause i dont get as good of reception as my other MS with just the mast. The prior owner removed the oem and replaced it with an alpine aftr mkt and a big *** black box tucked into the rear storage compartment. it sounds no better than the infinity even with all the sound options.

I asked if he needed a build sheet or vin and he said no...they all had them. he never hesitated. .... That is either hysterical or scary and I can't decide which. Limited Slip - Posi-traction is a GM trademark - was an option. My friends '98 LS is open. My two LS '97s and my Limited '03 are limited slip. My '99 has the locking R/D. I sold my limited slip from my big '97 to DC in CA years ago because his white Sport was open. ALL front differentials are open. I don't know where he is getting his information but he is most definitely wrong. I wish he wasn't. It would be nice if they did all come with at least limited slip in the rear. Edward

The Y is 'under' the center console section that slips under the dash, behind and below where the single CD player sits. The diagram shows it running along the tunnel, across and then up the side panel. I haven't torn the '99 apart yet so I'm going from the database diagrams. Edward

Would of been sweet if mine has a rear LSD, but oh well...I wasn't planning on doing any serious offroading anyways.
I thought all MS's came with full size spares, which surprised me to find out not all Sports came with full size spare or a spare at all. Mine came with a full size spare with the XLS/Limited 16" Swirl OEM alloys.

Which makes no sense if you have a full size spare in the first place. I believe all the vehicles with rear tire gates do have matching rims. At least I've never seen one that didn't. Edward
