I have a 2000 Montero Sport which I just got, and it has the "anti theft starting system".
I only got one key with the vehicle, so I bought a few "transponder" keys on ebay. The owners manual says the dealer must re-register the new keys.
1. Is the dealer route the only option for key reprogramming, and any guess on the approx cost? 2. Will the dealer reprogram keys that I bring in, or do they want you to buy them from them? 3. Should I get the keys cut first, or does the dealer need to do that also?
Thanks

You will need to have it cut first. Then you have 2 options: either have a dealer program it, or a locksmith. Don't know what is cheaper. I did it for my '00 when I bought it. If I remember correctly locksmith charged me $75. F***ing ripp off, but what can you do

Can you cut a key without the chip that would just open the doors in case you lock chipped key in vehicle ( which I came close to doing recently) ?

Yeah, you can, that's what I did. I have one of those keys in the magnetic hideakey attached under my exhaust for when I lock my keys in the car, which I have done probably over 20 times.

Well when you're an 18 year old, **** happens man. Whenever I go running downtown or w/e, I put all my stuff in the car so I don't have to run with it, lock the doors, then use the hideakey when I get back.

I have the same issue, as I just bought a 2001 Limited myself and only have 1 key. I bought one on ebay recently and it needs to be cut and programmed. Plus I am looking to buy a remote transmitter off ebay as well. Has anyone bought a remote from one of those places on ebay? Anything to worry bout here??
Also, If I am not mistaken, I thought I read somewhere in the manual, there is a way to bypass the system (sequence) to allow you to start the car with the valet (or unprogrammed) key. Am I right here?
thanks

i have to search it, but i remember there is someway you can make like a jumper and program the keys... some pin #4 or something like that..
i also just read this in the web,,.. but i dont know if is true and i dont have an spare key to test it... worst thing, you will look funny trying:
While pushing in both the ACCELERATOR and BRAKE PEDAL: Insert already-registered key in the cylinder Depress and release the accelerator pedal 5 times Depress and release the brake pedal 6 times, and remove the master key Insert the key to be registered in key cylinder Depress and release the accelerator pedal 1 time (Security indicator blinks) After 60 seconds, master key is registered (Security indicator is OFF) Each step must be done with 10 seconds

As far as I know, the only way to program the key is to hook up one of those "magic" boxes to the computer. Dealer has it, and so do many locksmiths. The remote you can program yourself. I ordered mine here: www.remotesandkeys.com/It comes with clear instructions. Don't remember exact procedure, but it involves connecting 2 pins on the port underneath dash with a jumper wire. Then do some trick with the key in the ignition, and finally hit a button on the new remote.

Update - I found a local locksmith to cut & program my two keys for $65. He has a "box" that plugged into the diagnostic connector under the dash. The two keys cost me $27 on ebay.

Here's a few transponder key blanks on Amazon which fit the 01-06 Sport: Transponder Key BlanksI'm hoping dclambertt will chime in because I'd like to know the same thing as well in regards to the key programming.

My bad folks, I meant to say I've reprogrammed key FOBS, not the keys themselves.
