Hope this response is not too late, Pistons will cost some money and require you to run premium which is not cheap these days. RPW headers and a Ed Kelly port and polish would not be all that bad but the install for the AEM is around $1500 with the cost of the unit. If it were me i would hold off on the pistons until you need a rebuild and even then I would not change the compression just rings so you could put some spray to it.

I agree with cwic, there is some expense with pistons and a port and polish and fuel. 3sx is about 20 minutes from me and if I had the money would have used them, but I don't so I learned how to do most things myself.
Not sure what route you should take, it depends what resources you have available. Do you have a welder and means to cut metal? If so...I recommend sugercharging.
Surprised?
Sorry cwic, just never dealt with spray...

I know your supercharger set up is already finished but I came across this the other day. moranav6racing.com/category.html?CategoryID=36Maybe the M90 would sit a bit lower in the saddle and allow a stock hood to be closed over it. I realize this is for a ford/mazda but you seem pretty handy doing fab work. One question, if I had my 3.0 in my MS, and just wanted to swap heads to the DOHC style, would I run into the same problems with the coolant lines and accessories as you did? I was under the assumption that everything on the 6g line were interchangeable. I mean would I be able to bolt the accessories up in the stock location and also use all the stock coolant piping from my SOHC engine? I just bought my Monte from a friend who had a water pump issue which (from what I gather) resulted in the engine throwing the timing belt.. Either that or the mechanic installing the new water pump didn't time the cams correctly. So all intake valves are bent on the passenger side... I figure replacing the heads would be cheaper and faster than fixing the stock ones. All I can find is heads from an eclipse which I believe is DOHC...

I've never tried it personally, I do know for a fact that the SOHC and DOHC 6g72 blocks are different. From my research, you can't put a DOHC heads on a SOHC engine, the water jacket that houses the thermostat in the front hit the cam sprockets, again, that's just what I read.
In any case, if you are interested, my original SOHC block and heads are available, make me an offer, I will PM with my contact info.
Good luck, Ted

First up, twood3006 your monty is inspiring. Im currenty building my 1997 Sport 3.0 Single Cam to be used with an STS Universal Remote Turbo Setup... So far I have OEM VR4 Rods and Pistons, Delphi 450cc Injectors, and will be tuning with an AEM FI/C 8... I wonder if you know if the fuel pumps are the same between the 1997-1999 MSports and your version because if so going with a walbro unit like your will be my best bet, turbo piping and oil line routing for the external oil pump will be my hassle right now since STSs universal kit only comes wit components... Cooling is also a concern for me, if you guys ave any suggestions for my setup Ill appreciate it, once I have all my eggs in the basket, ill post detailed step by steps with the whole process like twood3006 did.

Back at it again, the engine is out and the Stage 2 Brian Crower cam is ordered, This combined with a boost increase (i.e. smaller pulley), water to air intercooler, and 450cc fuel injectors should make things more interesting. Pictures to come in the following weeks!!!

T,
Where did yo source the cams? Also , did you consider adjustable cam gears. +1 and -3 seem to work well for the vr4. Cant wait till I get mine (vr4) back from the shop and can get my truck in for its rebuild. Good to see more progress on your project, would be great to see a dyno run or 0-60 vid.

I called a place I saw on the power block, maybe complete rod and custom, about building a radiator. Quoted me ~ 700 with fan and I would have to send in my radiator and give measurments to the fan so they knew how much room they had to work with if they were installing the fan. I have a spare rad but put it on hold till I ge the engine rebuilt. Clay

Ive owned my 1997 Montero Sport LS for a few months now, I have all the more reason to love the truck now besides it being the most comfortable vehicle I've ever owned. Iv'e been researching some ideas to make it more fun (and better on gas as well). I've looked into a 6G74 or a 6G75 swap, a remote turbo setup, centrifugal supercharger setup... I just don;t know where I should start. I basicly was thinking a set of 11:1 Pistons from 3SX, port and polish, and some RPW headers with an AEM FIC to tune it all but I don;t have alot of money to experiment with and this is my daily driver and I work full time so my time can be tight on occasions... I would like any suggestions anyone may have. Thank you for your time and your Montero is very inspirational. I may be a little late on this but I do believe the full size montero with the 3.5L runs a 10:1 Compression ratio stock. I would assume it helps with the bigger vehicle. Might be something to look in to.
