Hey guys I need help, I keep getting conflicting information on the Injen brand short ram intake for my 02 montero sport xls. One guy says it fits 97-02 all, another guy says it fits 97-02 3.0L only and not limited, and another seller says it will fit the 02 XLS. To my understanding per the dealer I have the 3.5 in my 02 XLS. First question: has anyone installed one of these intakes on their montero sport other than the es or ls? Second does anyone know the difference between the 3.5 and the 3.), as far as the intake/im is concerned. I contacted Injen direct and they arent even sure, they actually told me to check the forum .

Hey tbaltazar411 I went through the same problem. I called Injen direct and were clueless to the fitment. I rolled the dice and bought the Is1850P intake and fit very snug but worked! Minor bracket custom part added but works great and runs smooth! I post pic on this site under cold air intakes.

kingmonterosport, thanks again!! I will take the plunge, I've been getting hassled the last couple times I went to get the smog done, I guess this will be my Christmas present this year..... PS Injen gave me the same round about answer too when I called their tech department.

Hi king what bracket did you have to buy since I also have a 3.5l that I want to install from injen.

Just to share my success, I have a 3.5L limited so I found a 3.0L intake bracket at a pick a part and the injen IS1850P installed perfectly, half bolts for the 3.0 bracket didn't line up but still very secure, only thing is my MAF sensor doesn't really have much slack now so I may have to lengthen it.

I still have to do this before my next smog this year, they already told me my eBay adapter and open filter will not pass the next time I came through the shop, could you post a pic or PM me a pic ^^^^?

We'll I finally got it in.... Definetly feels more responsive than just the adapter and open air filter I had before!! I may try to re-route it into the fender well or elsewhere down the road.....

I like the K&N one for my FIPK filter. Its thin and doesn't seem to affect anything but it does catch a lot of crud before it hits the filter. Oh, and don't let the filter dry out. Edward

If we are looking for cold air for the engine. I was contemplating putting louvers on top of the hood. There is a company RunCool Hood Louvers that claims that with that simple modification we will gain mpg and hp. Anybody runs this modification?

Honestly I do notice an increase in throttle response and top end. I had open air or CAI's on all my vehicles. MPG + HP is increased. We'd have to dyno to get the real numbers. But couple with an exhaust upgrade and your usually looking at a 10-15hp bump.

Hey guys, For the ones that had done this modification.... Is there any fuel economy or HP increased? Or it just the looks and the sound? Thanks! Just this mod? No. This with the bump up to a 2 1/4" CAT-back, yes. Not incredible, but enough to bump the mileage up a tad. BTW, it doesn't change the sound appreciably - if at all. The most noticeable improvement is in low end torque. Moves the usable RPM range down a good bit. Its probably not too noticeable at sea level in a stock vehicle especially with an A/T, but its VERY noticeable at 5-6000+ ft running 33/35" tires. I imagine it'd also be pretty noticeable if you were towing a lot. I tested all this and made my changes before I started towing with my big Sport so I don't have a before and after for that. The idea is to couple the intake with the CAT-back and manual lock out hubs (on the 4WD models). Here that's worth 2-3 MPG. You don't need to replace the CAT(s) - the stock ones are fine. A 2.25" back from the last CAT and a decent muffler like the Flowmaster. AND, do NOT go any bigger than 2.25" on a NA Sport. The 2.5"+ trashes the low end. Been there, got the tee shirt. Edward

Ed what about a dual tip? Bad idea? Also what resonator size do you recommend to get the growl without the annoying tone on the highway?
