Just did my tranny pan this weekend, the pan held 3.4 qts. That's all I did I had bought 6 mitsu sp3 qts. according to my local Mitsu service dealer. It was really dark red and now it shifts much smoother than before the drain and fill.

I'm changing the AT fluid in my 2000 Sport Limited. Yes, using SPIII Mitsu fluid.
Unfortunately, I drained and dropped the pan/filter before I disconnected the cooler lines and pumped out the old stuff. My question: Can I start up the vehicle and pump out the old stuff with the pan/filter off? Or do I need to put the pan and filter back on and put fluid back into it, and start from the beginning?
The old oil is dark dark red, and a little burnt. I've seen/smelled much worse. No metal flakes or friction chunks in the pan. I really don't want to put it all back together and pour in good fluid just to take it apart again....

I've heard Motorcraft synthetic trans fluid works well. The mechanic that's checking my truck now used to have one and he used that fluid on it, he stated he never had any issues. Im considering giving this option a shot since my Mitsu dealer doesnt sell the OEM fluid and ordering it would be a lot of $$.

If you have a Hyundai or Kia dealer near by check with them. I'm sure they keep it around for the older vehicles even if the new ones don't require it.

Which reminds me: heres what I found today i read that hyundai & kia A/Ts were mitsubiti transmissions and that is why they all use sp3.AKA Hyuandai sp3,Kia (havent seen Kia's label)and Mitsubiti Diamond sp3 & ATF mitsubiti motors and in the UK DIAQueen ATF-SP3 I thought diamond was the only sp3 for mitsubitis??

I paid $4.50 a quart for the Valvoline ATF +4, it had better last longer than 5K miles! I had it done at a shop, so they hooked it to the machine that flushes it all out. I think its been long enough to know If you ever have any A/T issues from not using sp3?

I have a mobil rep I'm in regular contact with. I even compared a bottle of diamond atf spIII and hyundai spIII and they are identical. Anything mobil is superior to standard fluids. You'll see that 3309 is designed for mitsubishi and AISIN transmissions if you do your homework, and ATF+4 is even superior to SPIII.The idea with mobil products is not to change the fluid when it breaks down, but have the fluid last until you decide to change it out. I'll continue to run my mobil fluids and let things progress as they will thanks so howws the AT holding out ? let us know.

I actually had also posted this on anothr thread as well but since that thread was linked to this one and I see that there is another person reporting on fluid other than Mit SPIII I thought I would copy it over to here I thought since one the posts asked for input on fluid other than SPIII I would throw my two cents in, after reading all the info on this forum I was getting nervous about my next transmission service because I am currently running Havoline tranny fluid with an additive that I bought at NAPA that the guy at Ammco and at Napa said was what all the shops used in this transmission so I did it .......that was 6 years ago( by the way my Montero Sport is a '99' with the Invecs transmission in it) and 40,000 miles of towing about 1500 lbs all over the place (we take trips to the rockies so it has really been worked over the years) granted out of the 40,000 I was probably only towing the trailer 10,000 miles but that is still quite abit of towing I do have a tranny cooler on as well and I have expierienced no ill effects that I can tell, and now I am due to change out fluid and was planning on running the Castrol SPIII equivilent this next time since it has become available locally and I figured it would have the appropriateadditives in it. Well that is my two cents. One other thing total miles on the vehicle now 138,000 2016 Has it been long enough to know If you ever have any A/T issues from not using diamond sp3?

Okay I have to ask one question, is all this about $$$$? I mean really I looked it up and we are talking like the difference of $15 dollars. I mean really this is not an oil change you are doing every other month or so. It is like a 60K service means every few years. If you can't save $15 bucking over 5 years you have bigger problems than the cost of some Tranny Fluid... But if this is the quest for something that will replace it, because it is all you can get than I can dig that. Not picking on you mudrunner, cause many including I have said what you have ,but there are other issues Its not the $,but its how far away the dealer is and if it takes or may take more than a day,as in the dealer discovers some extra repairs must be done befor finishing the original job. One has to make accomodations to spend the night out of town or arrange being picked up buy someone if at all possible. In my case that just isnt possible. One could tow another car in,but what a hassle and that is.many wont have the capability to tow and the vehicle needs to be a towable manual trans. There are other issues, but i think that one eg may get one thinking. The $ difference ..its minor in comparison.

Well then, I am really screwed! I just checked my owners manual and it states under transmission fluid that it is RECOMMENDED SP II. And I just added a butt load of SP III "Like" fluid. I will let you know how it goes. 3/2016 Just checking...how has it gone since 2011?

Well you all have inspired me to do some maintenance on my MS. I changed the transmission fluid today and replace it with 3 quarts of CASTROL IMPORT MULTIVEHICLE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID. I also replaced the leaky valve cover caskets. I have driven the vehicle for a 50 mile test ride. No odd sound and the transmission shifts smooth (actually smoother than before). I will let you know how it goes in a few hundred miles. www.castrol.com/castrol/sectiongenericarticle.do?categoryId=9012226&contentId=7028224april 2016 How has your AT fared after all these years ? Has it developed pbs or not/ Id sure like to know as would others.
