I was under the hood of my '01 MS and noticed that the air intake is positioned in such a way that it can not draw in air as efficiently as possible. The intake is directly behind the hood seal and I would like to install a custom peice that allows it to draw air more directly from the grill.
I have searched the internet and have only found "cold" air intake devices that connect the AC to the system to boost performance. That would be great, but I simply want to move the intake so that it has access to more forced air. Any Suggestions?

I dont know what engine you have but I was trying to figure out the same thing for my 03 xls wih the 3.5 engine and there is no room to pull air from the front grill....the radiator pretty much has that block. There's maybe a 2in opening if that. I was thinking about making my own heat shield to lower the temp of the air coming into my cone intake and at the same time make use of the small open ports that I'm able to pull cooler air thru...Unless you can find a smaller radiator we are sh*t out of luck.

I was thinking of running a pice of duct work through that hole by the radiator and making a air dam in front of the radiator but beside it to direct some cold air towards my intake air filter. I will post how it all came together when I figure it out. Clay

Thanks Clay.
I was waiting to hear if someone had tried doing that. Are you going to cut away some of the plastic barrier that is in the way to make more room?

I think you guys should buy the air huricane they sell on TV! It looks like a real cool device for the small rip-off price of just 49.99$ LOL Just joking! I have personally learned that in case you are not adding a supercharger or turbo to your car, changing the intake and the muffler is way too costy for the 5-10 hp you may get out of it. As for the MS, I am happy that the intake is put up high under the hood, since even like that, I got water in it when I plunged my car last time face forward into the river. You wanna add performance, try a nice 15psi supercharger with a NOS tank in the back...! LOL Peace

Dont have to cut anything to make room other than the galvinized pice of duct sheet metal. The materials only cost me $10 and even if it does nothing it will be fun putting it together. Clay

well the air scoop is in. Kinda a hack job so in short i bought 2, 17x30" 25g sheets of duct work 1 5foot pice of rubber pipe insulation and a can of spray expanding foam insulation. I used the pice of plastic pipe from my old air box(the one that goes in the hole on the passenger front pannel and into the side of the air box) and wedged it into the hole in the core support next to the radiator(passenger side). stood a 17x30" sheet up between the engine and the intake filter cut it to fit down on the metal bracket attached to the wheel hub and cut it to height(so the hood will close) then screwed the pipe insulation to it on the engine side. then i made clips and screwed then to the sheet and the metal bracket and the core support next to the radiator to block the engine heat. then I made a 13 1/2" long x5 1/2" tall box that slanted back from right to left from 1" deep to 4" deep and cut a hole in the top left corner to stick the pipe in.(I had to remove the grill to put the pice of pipe and the box in place) I used the spray foan to fill any voids in the box, where the pipe goes in the box and where the pipe went through the engine bay. I also attached the top of the box to the piece of metal the wires run along (infront of and just below the radiator/air compressor)with a clip (the clips were just pieces of sheet metal 1"wide 2-3' long folded along the width) and self- tapping screws.i also made sure to run all screws into the box so i did not damage the ac compressor.good way to kill a weekend but would not suggest doing it for fun. Took a long time to get back to this 1. I did not get it dyno'd before but I will soon to see the over all of what i've done. I do think it has helped my highway mileage the most as faster constant speeds don't seem to affect mileage. The truck does seem to pull much harder once it hits 3k rpm's. One thing I can say is that now from a standing start (stop light) when I gun it (on green) the truck will get to about 60-65 before it kicks out of 2nd gear. Does anyone else's 3.5 do that or am i being fooled by the loud noise the HKS and open intake makes? Clay

Hey CWIC, Got any pictures of your work. I'm finding it hard to picture what you've done. I don't get under my hood to often. Thanks, Phil
