Hi,
I don't know if this helps or not. But if it is an automatic tranny, I believe it needs to be in N to change out of 4WD.

I was shifting the 4x4 lever and all of a sudden it stuck >:(and will not physically go back into the AWD. Please Help. Thanks I had a similar issue today. Would not shift into 4H or 4L today for a good 45 min. Felt like it was frozen in place. I know its not a solution but I am also looking for an answer too. I did get it stuck (like you described) once a couple years ago and it was some sort of solenoid or related to that. I cant find the work order to tell you more.

OK so now my lever is stuck! Except mine is stuck in 4Lo. Even though the lever is in the 4Hi position. How did you go with yours?

put it in neutral, got pissed and yanked the crap out of it and it came lose. put it into 2wd and haven't had a problem in weeks now. Gave it a good work out in 4WD-H and that has seemed to help no more flashing lights or sticking. Worked for me, what can I say.

Please tell me your joking!!! or that you're mistaken in what you were told. you don't have ball joints in the transfer case! Ball joints you find at the end of steering linkages, spindles, ect. you know suspension parts. Not IN a transfer case. Even if you broke a ball joint any pieces cuoldn't get in the transfer case.

Maybe not a ball joint but it was the shaft from the handle you use to switch it in and out. They had to remove the whole transfer case piece by piece to remove the unwanted pieces that had fallen in.

Have just had this happen to me, the 4wd shifter has a plastic bush to help it shift in the gated pattern. I took the shifter out and picked out what was left of the bush then i put the shifter back in until i can get a new bush. The lever is sloppy as hell but I can still use 4wd.

hey guys im new to this site but ive had the same. problem only my dumba$$ friend. thought it would be cute to shift it into 4 low when i wasnt in the vehicle. and while it was not running so when i saw what he did. i pulled it back into all-wheel and it seemed fine only to find out when i get home and try going up my hill. it some how had 2-wheel engagement to the rear axle. thats right you read right. 2-wheel drive from my all-wheel drive ms any way long story short. i had to diss assemble the center shifter console. and everything and take the t-case shifter plate off the top. there is 2 metal straps with small cut-outs in them. for the t-case shaft to seat into when your going from all-wheel to 4-hi and 4-low. there is also a long rod which is the end of a spring that keeps tention on the t-case lever. i messed with it making sure it wasnt broken or loose put it back under tention against the t-case lever and reassembled. after that it was fine and worked like the day i bought it brand new in 02. il try to get some pics on here but if any of you that are having this t-case shifting problem. and are mecahnical savy you can try doing what i did being that it was my first time it took me roughly 45 mins. to take it apart but about 20 to put it all back together . hope this loooong story helps some of you guys best of luck . vbird

There is a nylon/plastic (looks like Bakelite to you 'old guys') 'bushing' that surronds the metal of the piviot ball on both the 5-speed transmission shifter as well as the transfer case shifter on both the automatic and 5-speed. Eventually the bushing disintegrates and pieces drop into the transfer case. This happens on both the 5-speed as well as the automatic because the 5-speed shifter is built into the transfer case for Mitsubishis. I had this happen years ago where I suddenly coundn't shift from 4-Lo to 4-Hi coming off trail. Sucks. Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES - EVER - try to force the shifter. Those bushings aren't the most durable and forcing it can break the bushing if it isn't already. Idiots at the Jeep dealership I bought my 2003 Limited Sport from did this and shattered the ball because they were trying to shift while in gear. Take the time to pull the console, and pop the shifters. There's only three bolts holding the shifter in. It's easy to see if it's intact. If there are hair line cracks then replace it. Two years ago I had the transmission shifter ball go while out in Moab. Having had this happen a couple times before I could screw a round a lot and eventually shift between gears well enough to limp along but it was a real PITA. Did not do good things to my vacation. ALSO, while screwing around with the console off, make sure you check the rubber boot(s). Those don't tend to last. When they split they let crud into the t-case. Very bad 'ju ju'. Dealer, salvage yard, or you can buy just the fulcrum off eBay but apparently it has to be press fitting into place. Salvage is probably the best and cheapest solution but you run the risk of it failing as well in a short time.
