Do you have an amp on the subs? Do you have a capacitor?

How many lights? How many watts each? How often will they be used? What model 12's? What amp is running them?
There are a lot of variables, but unless you're going to use the lights a LOT AND the subs are Type R's getting 500w rms each AND you blast it a lot I would be surprised if you have any real problems. The overall lifespan of the alt will probably be shortened, but that goes w/o saying.
A cap will have no effect at all with the lights and won't really help the sound system in any way either. They're pushed hard by shops because the mark up is high and at $50-100 for a basic one they're a pretty easy sell. Most consumers don't realize the electrical benefit is non-existent.

Also, consider upgrading these wires to thicker gauge wiring. You would be upgrading the "big three" - the wire from the alternator positive to battery positive, the wire from the battery negative to the chassis, and the wire from the engine ground to chassis. All that in itself will help greatly.

Yea I want to do exactly the same thing and get a high output alternator. Im running 2 12 inch kicker cvx with a rockford fosgate p1000.1bd at 1ohm getting almost 1500rms. I want to go bigger but how big can I go? Oh and I already have a optima red top battery.

There are 140 and 180 amps on ebay. I have had mine for a year now no problems.

I found this but I am not sure that it will fit my '96 diesel Challenger. Also, isn't 200A a bit too much? Or the bigger the better? I am also planning to swith my batteries (yeah, my car came with two as it was originally made for and sold in Japan) to two Optima YellowTop at the same time I will upgrade the alternator. Any advice?

I would look really close at what you need. Not what you want. If you need 140 at peak draw, I would get 160 amp. Also look at feedback from the customers. I know there will be comments about how crappy ebay is; but I still have mine after two years it's still 100%. The batteries next on the list. I would do blue top. I believe the blue tops are a deep cycle battery. That's what I would get.

+1 on the blue top. Or a yellow top. Red top is just a starting battery. Not going to hold up to the constant discharge recharge cycles. XS power is an even better option. Or with a dual battery setup have the red top to run the car and use a deep cycle with an isolator to drive the audio components.

Odyssey is a good one to. Now that I think about it the optima's have been getting very poor reviews lately since they moved production to Mexico. Guy I spoke with at batteries plus about 6 months ago said the same. Hit or miss if you get a good one. Just replaced a red top with a bad cell after only 7 years. Got an XS power and love it. Sonic electronics had them on sale before Xmas for like a $80 more than a yellow top.

Optima has been bought and sold and bought and sold 2-3 times in the last 15 years or so and the quality keeps going down. "Lately", however, is for about the last 8 years or so. We've run Optimas since the early '80s and used to swear by them. My dad STILL has a red top from the late '80s that's gone through a dozen vehicles and is now sitting in his F250. Still going strong. But, I've gone through half a dozen blue tops in the last 10 years. Sigh. When I quit using them I was luck to get 2-3 years out of one. Last I heard the were being produced in China. Big surprise there. The only bad thing about the Odyssey is the price. They're awesome batteries but almost $300 for a group 65 is nutty. Thankfully, Sears relabels them and drops the price about $100. The Platinum P2 JUST fits with a little tweaking on the plastic battery tray. Think I had to use different J bolts, if I remember correctly. Edward

Why yes have to agree with you that automotive battery prices are ridiculous. Since I bought that red top the price of it has gone up a $100. It's the price now that a yellow top used to be and being that it lasted 7 out of the 10 years it was suppose to didn't want to go down that road again. Didn't even abuse it either. Ran the stereo at the beach for awhile once with the engine off but that was it. Was kinda disappointed. Before I went with the XS I was looking at the odyssey's and kinetics. Went with the XS after all the praise on the car audio forums. Thought I would share. Here's the setup. 0 gauge ready for the HO alternator so this post will come in handy. You see i had to rig it with the spacer as well.
